Current situation on Gili Trawangan as at 24th February

We are frequent visitors to Gili Trawangan and have just spent a wonderful week on the west coast of the island at sunset palms resort in a villa with private swimming pool which is situated on the westen side of the island. The west coast beaches have not really been affected by this as most of the businesses that had built on the beach are located in the busy part of the island on the eastern costal side. There seems to be a lot of misinformation regarding this being written here. We returned from Gili Trawangan today and basically everywhere and everything is open. Some businesses affected by this are taking the oppertunity to do some renovations to their hotel, bar, shop or restaurant. The government told all businesses that built on the beach opposite their business (which is illegal) that these structures had to be removed and work had to begin by 21st February at the latest otherwise they would knock them over and remove the debris. Some of the brighter owners took this threat seriously and started to remove the buildings a while ago and build a second story or if they had room build whatever they had built on the beach on their own land. However, some decided to wait until the 21st before starting to remove the structures which is In effect what's happening now. When we left yesterday this process was well and truly underway and we were amazed just how quickly most places had been dismantled and the debris removed and taken to Lombok on boats provided by the government. So rest assured the island is open for business and wont in anyway affect the enjoyment of the island. Given the speed in which this operation is moving I would say all the buildings will be down and debris removed easily in about 7 more days and the beautiful beaches will be restored to how they should be available for all to be enjoyed and enhance the beauty of the island even more. It should also be noted some hotels have in the past claimed they had a private beach it is actually illegal to make this claim as there are NOT any private beaches on any of the Gili islands. Bare in mind the island is only 2 kilometres wide by 3 kilometres long so everywhere is easily accessible
