Castle stay

Traveling to Ireland with husband first time, probably only time. Doing hotel in Dublin and BandB's around countryside. Wondering if its really worthwhile to stay a night in a castle? We are happy with 3-4star accommodations.

Is is worth your while? Really only you can answer this question, if its something you have always wanted to do and can afford it then go for it, if you're on a bit of a budget and not really bothered then don't.

But don't do the 'castle stay' thing just because 'people' have said you should.

Consider http://www.tipp.ie/butlerca.htm fraction of the price of Ashford and just as much a castle.

You could also look at staying in The Lodge (formerly Lisloughrey Lodge and now has same owners as Ashford Castle):

The Ashford Castle is our favorite hotel we've ever stayed at, and we've stayed at over 100 hotels. Although it is expensive, it is a stay that you will never forget. Go for it! You only live once!

Waterford Castle is also really nice spot and located on it's own island.

Many of those hotels are not castles, but use the name to jusitfy high prices. I wouldn't dream of paying all that money for the likes of Ashford, many of the places in the Blue Book are as much "castles" and far more reasonable.
