Auckland - Hahei via Thames and Coromandel town

Is this do-able?

We plan to leave Auckland in a hire car at 0930-1000, drive to Thames and stop for something to eat. Then continue on to Coromandel and ride the Driving Creek train at 3.15pm.

After the train trip, we'd continue on to Hahei where we are going to stay for the night.

Is that a comfortable one day itinerary?

Hahei is about 1 hour south of Coromandel village so it works. Driving may be a bit slower that you are used to as there are winding narrow roads in the Coromandel.

You could try and do an earlier train trip if you can, as you will have quite a bit of time in between Thames and Coromandel town. Don't forget you have to experience Hot water Beach which is on the way to Hahei. If you leave at 10am you should get to Thames at 11/12.

Thank you both.

We are overnighting in Hahei that night so plan to do Hot Water Beach the next day. We might try and make the earlier train in any case.
