Tairua or Whangamata as a base?

We're planning a 3 night stay to explore the Coromandel peninsula this December. Other than Cathedral Cove and the eastern beaches, I was hoping to do the Paeroa to Waihi bike trail during the stay as well. We're looking to stay in a large enough town that has nice cafes and other food choices. Would Tairua or Whangamata be better? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Whangamata is bigger than Tairua, with 2 supermarkets and a number of cafes in its township. Wont matter which location you choose, as you will either drive south to Waihi for biking, or north to Hahei for Cathedral Cove.

If you are seeking more action, Whangamata is the busier place for NYE and a beach scene.

Thanks Frangipani. Will check out the baches at both places and see which has better choices.

Tairua is more central to both of those destinations. A beautiful sleepy seaside town with a harbor, ocean beach and bush walks. As the previous person said, Whangamata is certainly bigger. Depends on what you are looking for. Donna @sunlover
