Tongariro Crossing - From Auckland Return in One Day?

Hi there,

A friend and I will be travelling to Tongariro on Saturday morning and doing the walk. My friend would then like to drive back up to Auckland on the same day but I don't think this would be manageable given it takes around 4.5 hours to drive down and then another 6-8 hours to walk.

I would prefer to go down on Saturday, do the walk and then drive to Taupo to stay the night returning to Auckland on Sunday.

Would appreciate your thoughts/advice on this. Thanks in advance.

Possibly tourists who do it without all the gear do it in summer when there are more daylight hours and not a lot of chance of snow. I think it's still a pretty rocky terrain though but you can probably get away with not having to lug an ice pick.

Do you know how long it takes to walk to the crater and then back to the car park?

You are thinking about it as if it was summer when every one does the track by the hundred

But this week is winter conditions the timing needs to be lengthened due to under foot conditions will slow you down also less day light hours

This week has a few days of snow forecast to low levels

And high winds

That extra snow can change that track a lot

If those high winds are still around Saturday it would be very dangerous on track

If you do decide to go try and go down Friday stay st national park or Whakapapa village get a shuttle Saturday morning early the shuttle drivers will let you know if it is safe to go

Walking to red crater then down to emeral and blue lakes is several hour in then time to take photos etc then same time back to car park if you do that you might as well keep going to end of track

Tongariro expeditions run shuttles for freedom walkers and if conditions need run guided trips with all gear provided for more cost

Their. Shuttles depart from Taupo turangi or you can meet them out side the base at Tongariro holiday park

There are a few guide companies run out of national park as well

Thanks for the advice everyone. I think based on the information presented and the warnings from DOC, we will postpone the trip to summer. Hopefully this information helps others out as well.

Sounds like a good plan is more crowded in summer but a lot safer

There are lots of walks around the area there other than the crossing so leave s few days to visit to see the whole park

It is the forth oldest national park in the world and is duel heritage listed

Three mountains together mt Tongariro mt ruapehu and mt ngauruhoe (mt doom)

Mt ruapehu you can get a chairlift ride up to 2020 metres at the skifeild
