Doing bio bay with a baby

Doing bio bay with a baby

We are travelling to San Juan at Memorial Day weekend . We are willing to do a bio bay tour at Vieques. Is this possible with a 1 year old baby .

If not Vieques , is any other bio bay tour possible for us?

Also how can I go to Culebra. Can somebody share a trusted tour company who can help a day tour to Culebra from Sheraton casino hotel San Juan.

I think you're options are very limited (read next to impossible) with a one year old. A day trip to Culebra would involve flying, since no one recommends the ferry especially with a baby. Bio Bay on Vieques requires an over night stay, and I am unaware of any tour operator who would take a one year old. Same with Bio Bay in Fajardo. Maybe wait a couple years and come back and try!

Thanks for your response.

I understand that the options are limited but if we reach Vieques/ Fajardo via flight then can we (me and my husband) take turns (one holds the baby and other goes and then repeat) in the same evening to watch the real activity . How long does it take the electric boat to show those shiny creatures.

We are going PR for the first time and really don’t wish to miss the bio bay.

Also if you can guide what other stuff should done considering our limitation. We have about 4 days with us.

Last I heard the electric boat in Fajardo was not running. Not sure there is one in Vieques. Also not likely the tour operator would allow a baby on board. Think 5 years is the minimum.

Once boat is out, you will have to wait until the next trip to go on board.

I'm confused why the ferry to Culebra is not acceptable with a child. People take children on them all the time. The ferry to both Culebra and Vieques from Fajardo are short- less than two hours.

We will also be in PR for the memorial weekend with a two year old and a three year old. We're flying into SJ at 945pm Thursday, waking up in the am, driving to Fajardo, and taking the ferry to Vieques. We're doing two nights in Vieques- no bio bay this time because most don't accommodate little children, which I get. But the hotel where we're staying suggested pony rides and you can't beat the beaches.

Then we're taking the ferry back to Fajardo, staying there for two nights with a day trip (via the ferry!) to Culebra. Then flying out on Tuesday from SJ.

If you really want to do the Bio Bays- which I do recommend- we did it sans kids in August/September in Vieques last year- I would just take turns. One night the husband goes, the other you go. Or see if you can book back to back excursions. Some places have multiples in a night. The one thing to consider is that it will be a full moon or close to it, so it won't be peak visibility.

Have fun! Let me know if you have any questions! Maybe we'll be children toting ferry riders together!

I didn't say the ferry was unacceptable. I said it wasn't recommended. Because it's not. Especially with a small child. Search this forum and for years people have had trouble with the ferry. It's not meant to support tourism. It's a means for Puerto Rican people to travel to work, school, etc. last week only one ferry was operating and there were hours of delays. Memorial Day weekend? Woof. Please let us know how your plan works.

So I wanted to update: we made reservations for Pony rides on Vieques for the kids and Abe's Bio Bay Tours on Vieques does allow children under 4 for free. We did a full tour day with them last year and it was fantastic. So now we'll take the 2 and 3 year old! We're also renting a car on Vieques from someone our hotel referred us to,s o that will make it easier.

Also- I double checked with one of my Puerto Rican friends (she just got back from a 2 week stay with her sister last week) about kids on the ferry. Though I myself had seen tons of kids on both ferries, I figured I would ask. She said this is what everyone does, it's not a big deal. It's like 2.25-2.50 on the ferry vs 100$ on the plane. So don't worry about that- go and have a fantastic time!

I may eat my words...but I will report back with how it goes. I'm not anticipating that it will be that bad, but who knows. I may be wrong.

@Elizabeth C: I don't believe jdgosox was referring to whether or not children can ride the ferry. They can, but it's not recommended because the ferry service is unreliable. It's cheap, yes. But you get what you pay for as delays and cancelations are typical of the service, which is provided to the locals so they have access to the main island as opposed to touristic purposes.

In short: we don't recommend the service to visitors, specially visitors with children. It's just easier and hassle free to fly. (The flights out of Ceiba are cheaper than those out of San Juan.)

Thank you Paris. Yes. This exactly. I've been to both island and have traveled with people who have been bumped from the ferries. We fly. Like I said, curious to see how it works. All opinions and experiences can be helpful to others.

Most of the biobay excursions that I have look into for our trip were kayaks, however, I did come across one that was just a boat which we had actually considered even though I have two teenagers. They may let younger kids on it. I hope it works out for you!
