Need Itinerary advice - 8 nights with base from Buffalo

Hi - we are flying in and out of Buffalo and have 8 nights in early/mid September. Would like to see Buffalo, Niagara Falls, Letchworth state park, and part of Finger lakes. We are in 50s, like sightseeing, nature and light hiking. Not interested in the wineries. Would appreciate any suggestions for itinerary/how many nights in each place. Thank you.

Letchworth can be seen in a day; consider an overnight at the Glen Iris Inn right in the park. Also consider heading about 20 minutes east to Dansville where you can check out lovely Stony Brook State Park.

Niagara Falls is also easily done in a day; Maid of the Mist and Cave of the Winds are the must-dos there.

Lockport (north of NF) is on the Erie Canal and a boat ride there is great fun.

If into Frank Lloyd Wright, you can tour two of his homes; one in Buffalo (Darwin Martin) and one in Derby (Graycliff). Also in Buffalo is the Knox-Albright (art) museum.

Other day trips to consider are East Aurora (Roycroft Museum), Ellicottville, Griffis sculpture park and Allegany State Park. If into Lucille Ball, there is a museum and a couple of statues of her likeness in her hometown of Jamestown. Chatauqua Lake and the Chatauqua Institute are other possibilities near Jamestown. If into gambling, there are casinos both in Niagara Falls and in Salamanca.

Re. how long:It depends on what you want to do there.

If wanting to visit the Finger Lakes using Buffalo as a base, consider the Canandaigua/Naples (towns at each end of Canandaigua Lake, the closest Finger Lakes) and perhaps Penn Yan (north end of Keuka Lake and Geneva (north end of Seneca Lake) areas. There are wineries in Naples and the NY Wine and Culinary Center in Canandaigua. Sonnenburg Gardens is also in Canandaigua near the culinary center. The drive along the west side of Canandaigua Lake (NY21, County Route 12) yields great views. Both Keuka and Seneca Lakes have many wineries and Geneva has developed a notable food scene.

To visit places further east and south in the Finger Lakes I advise using another base.

Hi SoFL-LovetoTravel;

Do your plans include visiting the Canadian side of the Falls ?

• Just about every view YOU have seen of the Falls was taken from the Canadian side.

• Cleaner

• Much more to see and do.

Best Regards

Thanks Rescue Team - yes - we do plan to visit the Canadian side of the falls. Any suggestions on hotels? - would stay 1 or 2 nights. Also was interested in visiting Toronto, but hotel rates are very high during second week of Sept when we would go - is that usual for Toronto/that time of year?

You're Welcome !

In Niagara Falls, if price is no object, I would recommend the Fallsview Casino Hotel & Spa.

FYI...rooms can not be booked online - telephone only.

The Toronto International Film Festival, the largest film festival outside of Cannes, is held the first 10 days of September. Supply vs. demand causes hotel rates to climb to unusually high prices.

If I may suggest staying outside of the downtown core and taking the subway in. Take a look at the Holiday Inn Yorkdale...

OR

Hotel Novotel Toronto - North York

FYI...Toronto is Canada’s largest city, 4th largest in North America after Mexico City, New York, & Los Angeles. You could spend an entire week in Toronto and still have plenty to see & do !

For more info about Toronto, please visit the Toronto forum, which is here on TA;

Sheraton at the Falls is another option for Niagara Falls. Stayed several times with my family, had beautiful Falls view. This one can be booked online:

But I agree, if you can go to Canada, see he Falls from there. US side does not even compete.

I have been to Buffalo on 3 occasions and I especially enjoyed the Albright-Knox Art Museum(splendid works of Art by leading French and American Masters),the Richardson-Olmsted Complex(splendid architecture),and Buffalo's downtown architecture(City Hall,Guaranty Building.).I have been to Niagara Falls on 4 occasions and I especially enjoyed the American side of Niagara Falls(Goat Island,Prospect Point).I have been to Chautauqua 3 times and I enjoyed it,but Chautauqua Institution has become very expensive.Enjoy your trip to Western New York State.

Rescue team is 100% right on all points regarding the Canadian side. Unfortunately, you can’t enter Canada with a U.S. drivers license anymore so be prepared with the proper documents. As far as maid of the mist goes, buy your tickets directly from them. There a bizzilion middle man websites offering maid of the mist tickets but really they will sell the tickets at an inflated price, throw in a cheesy tour or presentation and use that as an excuse for charging an arm and a leg. Think about maybe visiting Rochester for a day or two as well. As this site will show you it has quite a bit to offer as well.
