Tipping a driver

Hi,

We are getting a car from Niagara Falls to Buffalo airport and the quote is $90US + gratuity. Just wondering what would be the correct tip for driver? $10? $20? Does it depend on how helpful they are with bags and/or how friendly and chatty they are??

Realize that a lot of us don’t want “friendly and chatty “ here. Other than a brief “ hi how’s your day going?” kind of greeting, I’d rather be left alone.

I’ve seen foreign visitors comment in a negative way: “ The driver didn’t say a word to us the whole way!” This is normal here.

If the driver helps with luggage I’d probably go with $20.

15% would be average, and expected.

10% for below avg.

20% for above avg.

It's your call, based on your gut feeling and experience.

In the US cab drivers are not considered to be entertainers. Their job is just to get you from one place to another safety and in a timely manner. Do not expect a lot of chit chat. (Frankly I prefer a driver keep his mind on the road.)

15% it is then - unless the driver is really nice and friendly and then I'll go 20%.

I don't expect a driver to entertain me but they should at least be happy and friendly - they do a job that involves dealing with the public all day so I get that they may not feel like having a long conversation with everyone but I've had drivers that are surly and don't make your first experience of a place a good one.

Thanks everyone for your replies.

15-20% is pretty standard. Note that this is also the expected tip range at restaurants, which differs from most of the rest of the world.
