Only one night - but where?

We're flying into Atlanta at end May, before going on a self-drive tour around the southern states. As the flight is an early evening arrival, we'd like to stay in Atlanta, stroll out for a beer or two, and to eat, and enjoy the city. Maybe a few hours the next morning spent seeing a few sights.

We are lively 50+ couple, and may well have a rental car to park as well.

Any recommendations for either a general area, or a specific hotel? (We don't want a faceless airport hotel). Help much appreciated.

Take the train (MARTA) to Midtown -- any number of decent hotel choices, but among the more distinctive (i.e., not your typical chain hotels) that are in close proximity to MARTA stations, the Artmore and the Georgian Terrace come to mind. The Artmore is directly across from the Arts Center MARTA station, and the Georgian Terrace is across from the Fox Theatre and is one block from the North Avenue station. If you're looking to be able to walk around to bars and restaurants from the hotel, Midtown is far and away the best choice.

The reason I suggest taking MARTA is that by doing so you could save one day's car rental charge as well as the parking fees at the hotel. You can then take the train back out to the airport the next day and pick up your rental car there, or see if there's an intown location for your chosen car rental company and pick up the car there -- that would also save you some of the fees the airport rental locations charge. However, many companies don't do long-term/one-way/out-of-state rentals except at the airport locations.

Here's a suggestion. IF you rent a car you can drive to Midtown, if you're able to carry all your luggage on the train, you can do it that way also. Stay at the Georgian Terrace Hotel in the 600 block of Peachtree Street. There's parking at the hotel OR you can stay next door at the Indigo Hotel and park at the same deck. Easy parking. If you travel via MARTA, the North Avenue station is one block from the hotel. The Georgia Terrace is a restored historic hotel, directly across from the Fox Theatre, a 4500-seat movie palace that is now a performing arts center. Catch a show there if you can. In the Fox building is Churchill Grounds, a first-class jazz venue with some live shows. Restaurants about with a block of the hotel, and three blocks behind it is one of Atlanta's famous Southern food restaurants, Mary Mac's Tea Room.

A thought.
