Oh my GOSH ... I am so glad I saw your post!! I LOVE TO FIND NEW PLACES TO EAT IN OMAHA. Here are my favorites of all time ...

O'Casual. It's not going to be around forever ... but you should go there before they expand Dodge street (around 78th and Dodge)

Upstream - I know you've probably already been there

The Taj - An indian place by 114th and Dodge in the shopping plaza, not fancy but awesome Indian food

Stokes!!! -- 114th and Dodge strip mall area...very cute inside and has atmosphere and a great wine list

Coltons - west Omaha around 180th and Center Steakhouse with great appetizers and fancy inside :)

Le Sole Mio -- absolutely best Italian food in Omaha. Make sure you go early or go late ... or you will have a wait. But it's well worth the wait. Best best best Italian in Omaha. Huge Portions and Cheap prices and very nice atmosphere.

Firebirds - Village Point 168th and Center - Great wood-fired seafood and steaks and lots of other choices. Great appetizers and a kind of southwestern feel to the menu and very nice inside and romantic.

Johnny's Italian Steakhouse - Village Point Romantic Great Food and Great Selection Everything is good that I've tried (about 12 different Items) Veal Sinatra is awesome but don't order the chicken piccata it's the only disappointing menu item I've had there.

Kona Grill -- it's loud but it's good. Sushi and Seafood offerings are good and it's modern inside and they have a enclosed heated patio you can sit at if you are into eating outdoors (i am not)

Lettermen Club - Village Point --- It's good but not really romantic ... if you both love sports its good.

Flatiron grill - downtown by St Mary's blvd ... its legendary

The French Cafe - Old Market -- Yummy

Vincenzo's -- Yummy Italian food (not as good as Le Sole Mio)

Or try one of the old steakhouses off of the old market .. they are good but the atmosphere is old-fashioned but it's kind of cool to go into those places.

My #1 suggestion is LE SOLE MIO hands down. If not for your anniversary .. then for fun later on. :)

We moved away about 6 years ago, but we liked Charlie's on the Lake, The Drover, and Brother Sebastian's. Haven't been there lately, but plan on visiting next year and will seek out the old faves.

Lot of good places mentioned by Driveon, I would only disagree about Lo Solo Mio - I have had poor service there, and very average food and think Vincenzo's is a better meal experience overall.

As Zoey mentioned - Charlies on the Lake would be a good choice but for sure NOT Brother Sebastian's - that is one of the most overrated places in Omaha unless is has substantially improved over the last few years.

Actually, the best meals we have had this year so far in this area were in the Bluffs :

Binion's Steakhouse @ the Horseshoe Casino and the Waterfront Grill at Ameristar ( we went there twice ) . Great service and food - excellent presentation. Quite pricey. Both have a quiet, dark , romantic feel to them.

We are trying Rick's Boatyard tomorrow, will do a review - have had good comments from family on that.

My vote is for either of the two restaurants on the basement level of the Passageway. Trini's is a Mexican restaurant, and then I believe the other restaurant is V. Mertz. I thought the food was fine at both, although I must say I'm not a food snob. Atmosphere at both is great IMHO.

I'd suggest Marks in the Dundee area. I went there on my first date with my eventual wife, but it's been a couple of years since I've been. They're on the second floor, so you overlook Underwood Ave, and it's got pretty good atmosphere from what I remember.

Here's a link to the Omaha World Herald reviews of restuarants around town. Seems like there's so many places I've never heard of (and I've been in Omaha for five years)

Mahagony Prime at 140th and Dodge is a top end steakhouse and we really enjoyed that place as well.

I will second unclebobby 's recomendations V Mertz is good upscale food and Trini's always had tasty Mexican - I have not been to either in a while but always enjoyed them.

We went to Rick;s Cafe Boatyard last night - it has a nice atmosphere out overlooking the river. I thought the appetizers were great - we had both oysters rockefeller and cajun oysters - both great. The meals were in the ' good ' category IMO - prepared well, served hot - a bit lacking on flavor we thought the pasta sauces were too light for our tastes. Service was good.

Dessert was their downfall - the bread pudding was mediocre, the macadamia pie was just ' ok ' without much flavor and the bananas foster ice cream dessert was lacking in banana flavor.

I would go there for appetizers and drinks and the river view - but not recommend it for dinner given the high cost ( $200 - 2 couples ) and much better food in the area for that price point. .

I wanted to piggyback this post. We are tourists coming thru Omaha in two weeks for a couple of nights. We are staying at Embassy Suites at the market and always look for restaurants our family will enjoy. We tried Indian Oven and an Italian place, I think called Vivace a while back and liked both pretty well. You did not mention these. Are they still around and would you recommend another visit to these?

If you want a really romantic evening -the Flatiron Cafe. The BEST! My husband and I have gone the last three years for our anniversary. We LOVE it, they make you feel special. If you go early like around 5ish, you can be seated in the point of the restaurant.

Yes Vivace is still around and has always been good. I don't like Indian food so can't comment on that. There are a number of good choices in the Old Market and in the different hotels downtown. One place that used to be in the suburbs is Das Rhineland for German food that is now across from the ConAgra campus.
