Are the fireworks in Central Park superior to those at the Battery Park? We are staying near Battery Park so those would be more convenient?

Also if we should decide to go ahead and try Times Square, will we be able to take the subway back to the hotel, and will it be safe for a mom and two teenage girls? Also can you see the fireworks from Times Square? Thanks

If you are convenient to Battery Park - stay there and view the fireworks from there.

In my opinion, fireworks are fireworks!

Stay away from Times Square if you don't want to be herded into a pen for 6-8 hours with no facilities (seats, bathrooms).

Usually those in TS are a younger crowd hopped up on alcohol and whatever, not a good environment for a Mom and two teenage girls, I wouldn't let my wife or daughters there.

You will not likely see either fireworks display from Times Square!

Happy New Year.

The fireworks downtown are near the STatue of Liberty so from that standpoint, they might look more special b/c of the Statue BUT you'll be further away from them unless you're on a boat (there are lots of boat cruises).

You can not see fireworks from TS and I agree with Poppa, stay away unless you're very brave.

Times Square or crowds like that isnt my thing, but considering people get there hours ahead, and you're not allowed to bring liquor in - and there are 1000s of cops - I doubt you'll be surrounded by an ugly drunken crowd...

the subways will be packed late into the night and should be fine, or take a bus up the far east side (1st or 3rd Aves), then walk the rest of the way.

As mentioned, yes there are fireworks in CP - here is a blurb from a website I came across when I GOOGLED 'fireworks-central park':

In New York City, New Year's Eve is celebrated with vigour as the traditional midnight fireworks are let off in Central Park, South St Seaport and Prospect Park in Brooklyn.

Spectacular in its own right, New York City has masses to offer during the New Year celebrations. Those looking for sheer numbers should head for Times Square to see the famous ball drop at midnight. But, if you don't fancy freezing on the street with tens of thousands of people, we recommend you book to go to a restaurant or bar close to one of the firework locations and aim to finish in time to catch the pyrotechnics.

Uptowners should head for Central Park, where the explosions signal the start of the New York Road Runners Midnight Run, Brooklynites for Prospect Park and those hankering for stunning cityscape views should definitely go for South St Seaport. With its location on the East River and close to Brooklyn Bridge, the views are awesome.

Hope this helps!

Whereabouts in Central Park are the best spots to view fireworks? We have booked a table at Tony's Di Napoli at Second Avenue at 83rd Street. for dinner then plan on walking to the park.Any tips would be great.

You're at prime location for walking to 79th street & Fifth's entrance to the Park...follow the happy masses likely towards the areas to/around Bethesda Fountain and Enjoy!

Litsa is spot on about the BF location and here is a blurb from a NYE website:

Central Park - (212-794-6564) will also host a midnight fireworks display. Tavern on the Green and Sheep’s Meadow, as well as high rises surrounding the park are among the best spots to watch the fireworks. Other events in Central Park include a costume contest and dancing at the Central Park Bandshell plaza. Athletes who want to ring in the New Year by breaking a sweat can take part in a four-mile run through Central Park hosted by New York Road Runners (212-860-4455) or join the cyclists and in-line skaters of Time’s Up and ride from Washington Square Park in Greenwich Village to Central Park’s Belvedere Castle.

Hope this narrows down a location for you.
