Cool / unusual places to eat or drink near Times Square.

We're staying at the Times Square Hilton in a couple weeks and I was hoping for some suggestions for any unusual/fun/atypical bars or restaurants within a short walk. We're planning on spending our time all over Manhattan, but it would be cool to find a place near the hotel for an evening's first or last drink. Thanks for all suggestions.

Head one avenue over to 9th avenue there are tons of places... I would just walk on 9th between 43 street and 55th street and find a place to your liking.

If you don't mind a dive bar, Rudy's on 9th between 44th and 45th is fun and cheap.

Have you tried Ethiopian food? My favorite Ethiopian restaurant is not far from Times Square.

If you consider kilt-wearing bartenders unusual, St. Andrew's is on W. 46th between 6th and Broadway.

chezjosephine.com

is a block and a half from your hotel (heading west on 42 st.) French bistro owned by the adopted son of Josephine Baker. Live music every night and fun atmosphere. Birdland on west 44th st. is an excellent jazz place. Mon. nights is their cast party night (open mike) and lots of fun. Don't Tell Mama on restaurant row (46th st. b/w 8th & 9th ave.) is a fun piano bar.

If you're a fan of boxing, or have even a slight interest, Jimmy's Corner is legendary:

There's this place:

Note that it does not get great reviews for food...

Double votes for Ethiopian; there are a few places in that area.

The food, the "arrangements" (ie- no knives, forks, spoons), the "ambience", etc, pretty unusual - and tasty!

Ask at Meskerem about the Ethio music/dance in the late evening. Either at the restaurant or in the neighborhood there is often authentic music and a very very unusual kind of dancing called "iskista" where local Ethiopians get together. They are welcoming of outsiders, and this is a really really cool/unusual experience!

Queen of Sheba is another Ethiopian place around the corner from Meskerem. I've never been there, but it's also supposed to be very good.
