Did Grill 23 last time any suggestions this time ?

My husband and I were in Boston in Dec 07 and had a fabulous and romantic dinner at "Grill 23". We are now stopping there for one night May 4th prior to heading to Newport the next day for our anniversary.

We're not particularly looking for a romantic dinner ..just something fun, entertaining etc....

We thought about "Cheers" but as I have been there before, and only the outside is reminiscent of the show (along with not hearing the greatest reviews about the food), think that maybe we should just pop in their for a drink (my husband has never been in there).....

However it was mentioned to us that we should try The Warren Tavern ??

Would appreciate any info or suggestions that anyone would care to give !

Go to the Warren Tavern in Charlestown, MA. if you get the chance, it will be well worth it for you:

www.warrentavern.com

You could walk up to the Bunker Hill Monument after visiting the USS Constitution first in the Marina. There's also this fairly new Max & Dylan's Kitchen & Bar near the marina that has unbelievable sliders, even filet mignon ones from what I'm being told.

Then go right to the Warren Tavern afterwards at 2 Pleasant Street where you'll be in that neighborhood. It's definitely cozy, warm & very historical, so do not leave Charlestown until you stop here for a drink, lunch or dinner.

The following was taken from the Warren Tavern site:

"The Warren Tavern's the most historical watering hole in America, not just the oldest pub in Boston. This older tavern in Massachusetts was visited by many famous individuals. Over 225 years old

The Warren Tavern was first erected in 1780 in Charlestown, MA. It was also one of the first buildings raised after Charlestown was sacked by the British. Visited by national heroes, George Washington stopped here for refreshments and conversation & Paul Revere considered it one of his favorite watering holes. George Washington's funeral speech was given here. In historic Charlestown, The Warren Tavern is located on the cozy streets of Charlestown, it's both a staple for Charlestown residents as well as an exciting location for visitors who want a drink and to dine in one of the most historical taverns in the United States."

I wouldn't bother taking your husband inside the original Cheers on Beacon Street. Take some pictures outside and head over to the second location at Fanueil Hall if you want to have a drink. At least that one has the replica bar, etc.

A couple of fun, entertaining dinner options are Tangierino in Charlestown or Strega in the North End.

Thank you so much NoMo01 and Will007 !

I think after speaking with my husband that we have decided to go for The Warren Tavern. After I show him "Cheers", he wants to see for himself what the inside does look like....

Just another quick question...we are staying at The Sheraton Boston (no comments please) but am wondering what the best way to get there is ? We plan on walking to "Cheers" but not sure of how to travel or get to The Warren Tavern..

With Thanks !

You can take the MBTA subway from Back Bay (the orange line) to the Community College stop heading outbound. From the subway exit, go upstairs and the Bunker Hill Community College will be facing you. Cross Rutherford Avenue here and you'll see the 99 Restaurant. Keep going straight here until facing you will be the historical Charlestown Savings Bank complex. Turn right onto Main Street/Warren Street. 2 Pleasant Street will be on the right hand side just past Cordis Street, you'll see it on the corner.

If you end up taking the train from the Back Bay area of Boston OR the State Street stop, which is near Faneuil Hall Marketplace, just get off at the Bunker Hill Community College stop OR you can walk from here down toward Haymarket Square. Just continue and turn right onto Joe Tecce Way, which is No. Washington Street. Continue to follow No. Washington Street and it'll become MA-99N/New Rutherford Ave., you'll be at a 5 way intersection, if you take a left the Fleet Center/Boston Garden will be on Causeway Street. Go straight over the footbridge and on the other side of it you'll be in Charlestown, all along here is the Freedom Trail, so you'll see the line for it any way. Once over the footbridge turn right onto Chelsea Street, then left onto Warren Street, follow it all the way, you'll pass Winthrop Street, Soley Street, Monument Avenue, then Pleasant Street. On the left hand side on Warren Street you'll see the Warren Tavern at 2 Pleasant Street.

It's starting to be beautiful out weather wise! Hopefully you have a great day for this walk or subway ride.

Have a great time!

You were at Grill 23 and now you're considering Warren Tavern? Are you sure about that? Warren Tavern is an historic pub, sort of worth visiting for a beer, not for the food. The food is mediocre at best. I think your stomachs will be happier if you have a pre-dinner drink at Warren Tavern, then go to Figs or Tangierino, both in the neighborhood. Or Olives if you want to spend the same amount as you did at Grill 23. I will give Warren Tavern the edge over Cheers for food--food at Cheers is flat out horrible!

Warren Tavern is in Charlestown, near the Bunker Hill Monument and not far from Old Ironsides, so you may want to plan this around your visits there.

Thank you Rantipole for your input. I guess my point in mentioning that we ate last at Grill 23, was just to make a point that this time instead of doing a higher end restaurant we just wanted casual, with atmosphere and good food (of which I am sure that in Boston there are numerous ones),as the following night we will be having our "Romantic, higher end and special dinner at The Chanler for our anniversary.

Along with that we wanted to make sure we were going to a "must eat and see while in Boston" type of place. After speaking and reading to a number of ppl and reviews on Trip Advisor we were more of less leaning towards The Warren Tavern..

Oh, I see now. Where is the Chanler? Somewhere in the country or along the shoreline?

OK, so you'll be OK at Warren, it's not gross or anything, but still would recommend you move on to Figs or Tangierino for actual food.

The Warren Tavern is a fine spot for getting a feel for historic Boston. It is pub food to be sure, but as long as you understand that you should be fine.
