Nothing to do in the evening???

Hi all, fine tuning our itinerary which is coming along great for a 4 day visit in 2 weeks time. However really struggling to find anything special to do in the evenings.

Thee don't appear to be any shows/bands etc on when we're there (just miss Richard 111 w/kevin spacey and noel gallaghers show), don't really fancy Stomp or BBB/TeatroZZ. The movie special at castro theater has also been turned down by the mrs and running out of ideas beyond 'movie and dinner' like at home!

There are also no Giants games and the 49ers are out of town

Any suggestions? We're in the city Oct 13th-16th and all I've got planned is to visit the TIX Bay on union square on the saturday lunchtime to see if anything appeals at half price for that evening.

All suggestions much appreciated

If you are going to SF from the UK then don't plan too much for your evenings. You will be dog-tired with jet lag in the evenings when you first arrive on the west coast.

yeah maybe we should just plan on nice meals then bed as we will be up early each day due to jet lag/fitting stuff in, just thought it'd be nice to do something special one night.

Any current plays running, maybe small productions, that people have seen and would recommend for evenings of October 13th-16th?

ACT (American Conservatory Theater) is doing "Once in a Lifetime" by George S. Kauffman and Moss Hart.

You aren't interested in Beach Blanket Babylon? Too bad.

While the Castro Theatre is the best of them, there are a handful of other art/rep movies theaters in SF (you didn't indicate if the Castro rejection was a general "no movies" or the specific shows playing).

Assuming it's the specific movies playing, you might also check out Landmark Theaters (they have multiple locations), the Balboa, the Red Vic, Sundance and . . . (there are probably more, but those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head).

Beyond that just dinner/drinks, maybe a walk around town or perhaps a "view restaurant?" (I don't suggest eating at one as they are often over-priced & underperforming due to the "view tax," but maybe a desert or after dinner drinks, or before meal . . . ).

Anyway, that's a few thoughts,

hlo

Get out of your hotel and walk around. Go to various parts of the city and explore. Try Noe Valley, the Marina, the Mission, the Castro, Glen Park, etc.

http://sf.funcheap.com/ has some inexpensive ideas for fun.

http://www.sfbg.com/listing/17 will have listings for music in the evening.

The SF Jazz festival has events on in October . If you like jazz, you can choose one of the shows that are on during your visit

Unfortunately, the Red Vic went dark at the end of July of this year.

Besides "big name" concerts, there's smaller venues like the Great American Music Hall and Slims, who have shows that cater more to a smaller, more targeted (and often more discriminating) audience. There's also tons of local bars and restaurants which have local talent playing nightly (or at least on weekends); if you indicate your musical tastes somebody may have specific suggestions. Personally I'm fond of both the Saloon in North Beach (the oldest still operating bar in the City) and Lou's Pier 47 who feature live blues nightly, as well as a couple of bands who are in the standard rotation at Johnny Foley's in Union Square, and a couple of once-a-monther's at the Riptide way way way out in the Avenues.

Check out GoldStar.com. You must register, but it's free and lists loads of discount tickets for events. You can sort by date, but pay close attention that the event is actually in San Francisco - I see they don't filter too well and some events are in the East Bay.
