Must sees

Hi! We will be in Bar Harbor for 2 days in mid to late October. I am trying to compile a list of must see and do's. I know it will be cold. Any suggestions? Thanks!

How will gardens be worth seeing in October? Doesn't look like they are indoors ...

The Asticou Gardens have a beautiful, raked Japanese section. And a flowing stream. And a lake. And ferns and mosses. And evergreen trees, including an exotic, drooping variety. Thuya Gardens has sculptures, late blooming fall flowers, a wooden surrounding wall with beautiful carved doors. And, remember, here on the ocean, fall lasts into November. Plus the walkway up to Thuya is lovely with great views down onto Northeast Harbor.

Thuya gardens I have no doubt will be magnificent then. We went last month and it was stunning. The steps were interesting to climb and turn around once in awhile to see the view. If you see a worker in Asticu garden, ask how to get to Thuya. Parking is tight in both. We always treat ourselves for the elegance of the Reading Room. Every other night we are "eating with our hands" but for one night we dress a little nicer, and eat with our pinkies up😀

Both Thuya gardens and Asticou Gardens are magical in October: we had visited both many times in the fall. I do remember going there during the Government shutdown several years ago... Asticou Azalea Gardens is such a lovely peaceful spot to take a rest after a long hike. Loved it!

Favorite restaurants that we make a point to return to each year are Galyns, Side Street for the best Mac & Cheese with or without lobster, Stewman's on the water, West Street (newly remodeled this year), Paddy's (love the outside), Jordan Pond for lunch and/or popovers also dinner is very nice, Asticou Inn for lunch & popovers!
