Late arrival flight...any place to stay one night close by?

We are arriving late from Canada...seems a real pity to go straight to our cottage especially when paying so much a day. (Especially when you miss the “day” part😏) Just wondering if there’s “a no frills” hotel or B&B that we can slip into for a sleep and then off to Costco; then our cottage for the whole day!

Mahalo in advance~

The airport is in Lihue and there are hotels there. A Marriott and Garden Island Inn are a couple.

But won't you have to wait until check in time- you won't get the whole day in your cottage.

True emmajm~ Thinking it would be nice to go out for a nice breakfast, drive around to get our bearings, Costco and then off to our place. We’ve always gone directly to our place...thinking this would be a way to get an extra day! Lol

Teresa, I honestly think you would be more than happy settling in only once - and being able to start your holiday first thing in the a.m. That first morning and its views are precious. You want them where your vacation rental is. It is there that you will get your bearings and breathe in Kauai. Remember, too, that you will wake up early here - you will be on mainland time. And although BC isn't as big a diff as some, you will still be surprised how early you are up and ready to start your vacation.

On what part of the island are you staying? There is 24 hour Safeway in either direction that would see you supplied up and ready to enjoy.... Honestly, Lihue doesn't give a great morning start to seeing the island, unless you are at the Marriott, and you've said that isn't what you want....

Please let us know where on the island your rental is. It could be a simple 20-25 minute drive to it. We've had many people who are staying in Poipu inquire about spending their arrival night near the airport even though Poipu is a quick drive. Ditto with many east shore locations. Spending the first night somewhere else can be more work than it's worth to be checking in and out then checking in again the next day

I would agree that you should really consider driving directly to your accommodations. However, should you decide not to do that, these are the least inexpensive places for one night.

Garden Isle Inn...Poipu. Very near airport

Kauai Inn...Poipu..Very near airport.

Kauai Shores...Kapaa....only 10-15 minutes from airport.

Heading straight to the accommodation upon arrival is best practice IMO.

Waking up at your"cottage"....ready to start the holiday will be wonderful.

I see a night in a airport lodging...as a waste of time....checking-in...checking out....waiting to check-in the second lodging... traipsing around with your vulnerable valuables in the rental vehicle all the while.

Losing the early evening hours at your accommodation due to the time of your flight....is just part of travel IME.

Come to think of it...when we have a late evening departure ( which is the norm with these turnaround evening flights back to the mainland)...we ALWAYS now book that last night too through to the next day....to ensure we have a place that last looooo...nng day, before the brutal return flight home. it is $$ well spent....both on arrival and departure day.

Late like 10pm? Then sure go ahead and save some money and stay at Garden Island Inn. The Marriott is expensive.

If you are staying on the north or west shore and getting in after 8 pm your thinking is really good. I have tried to make that north drive at night after a long day of travel (and everything required the day before to make the travel happen) and it is murder. Plus it is really dark! The drive to the other south and east sides is easy enough that it is probably not worth staying somewhere else for 1 night unless it saves you more than 100 bucks. The west side drive is easy also but it is a long drive back to costco.

Garden Island Inn is close by and I agree it is dark and if you aren’t familiar driving can be a bit scary. We arrived early evening about 8 pm and it was pitch black I was glad of a short drive to the condo.
