Genealogy/History Trip

My adult daughter and I are planning a "girls weekend" in May. We plan to arrive in Charleston Friday and leave Sunday. Our main focus will be the West Virginia Archives doing genealogy research. I understand that the West Virginia Museum closes around 5:00 p.m., so I am hoping to find some interesting things to see or do once the archives building closes. We will be staying in one of the downtown hotels, so I'm wondering if there are any areas that we should avoid if we're walking.

The ancestor I am interested in at this time was a coal miner who lived in Malden. My daughter and I thought a trip to the Beckley Mine Exhibition might be interesting if we have time while we are in West Virginia.

Any suggestions as to additional places we should also consider?

If your ancestor was a coal miner, I think the mine trip would be good. There are also the miners' houses which are interesting to go into, and the one room school house. If you will be in Beckley anyway, I would suggest a couple of additional options...

1) Make the drive to Grandview...about 5-6 miles. There are some hiking trails there if you like that, or you can just enjoy the view. Theatre WV also presents Honey in the Rock and Hatfields & McCoys in the summertime, as well as some music concerts there. No, it looks like Honey in the Rock is no longer done.

2) Make the drive to Fayetteville to the New River Gorge Bridge. about 18 miles, and stop at the Visitor Center. From there you can take a path up a little hill and look down on the bridge, take steps down, down, down and look up at the bridge, go into the Visitor Center and look at the canyon, or take the winding road down under the bridge...quite an adventure.

I am not a shopper, but some people like the Tamarack Gift Shop at Beckley...lots of WV made items, there by juried selection and since it is just off the 4-lane so easy to get too. https://www.tamarackwv.com/

The state capitol building is right by the museum and very pretty, so take the time to go into the rotundra and cross the street and take the steps for a view of the Kanawha River.

While in Charleston, you could walk down Capitol St. Many nice shops and great restaurants there. Capitol St. Market at the end of the street (under the interstate) is wonderful that time of year. Tons of beautiful plants and some fresh veggies to buy.

Yes, do go to Beckley and the Exhibition Coal Mine at New River Park. Take the tour of all the different "coal camp" buildings on site as well. Very interesting.

The shows at Grandview National Park don't start until June, but I agree with going there if nothing else but to see the View! Along the road going there is a little gift shop that was built by the Barnwood Builders guys (if you watch that show) I also agree to stopping at Tamarack and go up to the New River Gorge Bridge. Also in Beckley about a half mile from the Interstate is Chocolate Moose/Mt. St. Golf/Outside In Gym..stop there for coffee, some ice cream, and a round of mini golf. Very unique mini golf course, with each hole representing something about West Virginia. (the bridge, coal mines, turnpike toll booth, etc) Lots of fun! They also have some gifts and books about coal mining.

Malden is just outside of Charleston, you could drive thru there on your way to Beckley. Beckley is just under one hour from Charleston.
