Off The Beaten Path

my niece, great nephew and I are going to Berkeley Springs and Harper's Ferry. We leave tmw (6/20)... I have done my DD and found places to see and things to do. But we tend to like the out of the way places. We like scenic places, trails, local eateries, and oddities. Any suggestions???

That second link above is for southern WV. Berkeley Springs is in the eastern panhandle. 4 hours away. This might help.

And of course there are plenty more threads in the Berkeley Springs and Harpers Ferry forums.

Thanks!! Very helpful. We are only about 3.5 hours away from Berkely Springs... We have seen a lot of our state, except for Eastern Panhandle.

This maybe too late but here are a few ideas. And yes I'm from Kansas City but I spend a lot of time in the eastern panhandle for work.

1. In Berkeley Springs take highway 9 west to the scenic view overlooking the Potomac River. It is a stunning view.

2. Check out the city park in Berkeley Springs as well.

3. Visit Shepardstown, WV. When in the area this is where I prefer to stay the night. A number of good restaurants in town.

4. Take the River Road to see where Lee crossed the Potomic and the small Shepardstown Battlefield.

5. Visit O'Hurley's General Store, Shepardstown. If you are lucky enough to be there Thursday night they play live music.

6. Go north and visit Antietam Battlefield

7. Take backroads from Shepardstown to Harper's Ferry.

8. Visit Charles Town and the spot where John Brown was hung.

That should keep you busy for a few days.

Blue Moon Cafe is my favorite place for lunch in Shepardstown. The Press Room is my favorite for dinner.
