Train POL to Nyaung Pain

We plan to take this train then have our driver bring us back to Mandalay. Can we buy tickets ahead of time (in Mandalay) or must they be bought on the day of, in POL? Is there any chance it would be too full to get a seat on the left side?

You have to buy tickets in PO at the station on day of your departure. Usually it is not very full, otherwise stand in a door opening, no problem.

Some days the train is delayed or does not go at all, in that case take a foto from the road going through the gorge.

Thanks Rolf. Is is possible to buy tickets Mandalay to Naung Pain (I realize it costs more) or Hsi Paw and then just get on in POL without riding it all the way? (We are driving to POL.)

It most definitely is, we did it last month.

Just buy your ticket at the Mandalay train station (take your passport) just have to buy as if you are leaving from Mandalay.

When you arrive at POL station you can just get straight on the train as you will have your ticket already.

I ended up buying my tickets at 4 pm the day before in Pyin Oo Lwin when they went on sale. The only tickets left were ordinary class. We worried about that a bit but the seats were fine, not padded but not terribly uncomfortable. The train arrived on time but left POL an hour late as they didn't have enough cars to accommodate all the people. They had to shunt the freight car off the track, add three more ordinary class cars then put the freight car back on. It was a little confusing as none of the cars were numbered. The trip was enjoyable, the train was bumpy and rocky but fun, the people friendly.

Ordinary class is better because interact with the local people rather than just tourists. That line is not that bumpy compared to some others in Myanmar. It's good you had the experience.
