Assateague Beach

We would like to visit Assateague Beach. Can we actually spend time at the beach with our kids? (we won't camp but get a hotel room nearby.) Also, Is there guest parking, or do we have to get an annual parking permit in order to visit the place?

If you're looking to visit Assateague in Virginia (as opposed to the Northern end of the island which is in Maryland), there is no camping on the beach which is a public beach, with parking, that is located within the wildlife refuge. You would stay on Chincoteague and visit Assateague either on foot, on bicycle or in a car. There is a daily, weekly or yearly pass that you can buy as you enter the refuge.

Last time I was there the prices were as follows: daily pass is $8, weekly pass is $15 and the yearly pass is $30. If you drive onto Assateague from Chincoteague you will have to pay to enter. If you bike or walk your entrance is free.
