Hiking during Shutdown

Hi, We are coming to Charlottesville this weekend and looking for a place to do a day hike that is not affected by the shutdown. Does anyone know good places that are not on national parkland? Thank you.

There is a great website called Hiking Upward which has hikes in the Mid-Atlantic region. There is a master map on their site and you can see all the hikes they profile by area.

There is Crabtree Falls and a hike to The Priest up across the Appalachian Trail you access from the upper parking lot of the falls. These are not far from Charlottesville. The site also has a hike around the Mountains near Wintergreen resort that includes a visit to Shamokin falls.

If you want to drive a little, there are great hikes up on Great North Mountain on the VA/WV line. While these are in George Washington Forest, they are accessed by public roads and there would be no one there to say no.

Good luck!

Check out Virginia State Parks website, it would be a drive to Douthat State Park but that is very historic and has lots of trails.

In addition to the great ideas already provided, here is a link to previous discussions regarding hiking near Charlottesville, some responses involve Shenandoah NP but there are many other good suggestions......

Another great resource for hiking is Midatlantichikes.com

If you click on Virginia, you'll see the state with a marker for every hike. You can pick out the area you are interested in, click on the hike, and get great information about the length, difficulty, directions, etc.
