Need advice on rental car choice in Arizona and Utah

I would love to hear y'all's opinions about the most appropriate type of rental car we should use for our trip our West. We are taking a 2-week trip, making a "circle" from Las Vegas, and our route is the following: leave Vegas, drive down to route 66 and Peach Springs... Flagstaff....Page...back to Grand Canyon south rim....Monument valley...Moab.....Torrey, UT....scenic rt 12 to Bryce Canyon...Springdale and Zion...back to Vegas. This route is now fixed due to the reservations we have made. We want to take advantage of scenic opportunities enjoyed via drive up overlooks, and we are aware the road conditions on this route will vary, and even be a challenge in places. Would you please share your recommendations on vehicle type? We were thinking of minivan, (we are a family of 4: hubby, me and 2 older teen daughters), but is an SUV needed instead?? Also, would you share where you think we will have the bigger challenges, and offer suggestions. We are on a budget, and are trying to be frugal with the rental expense. Thanks!

Welcome to the forum.

Given that you can't take a rental car off road, your choice of car is really what is most convenient for your family. There are no driving situations you will face that will dictate any different type of car, Personally, I prefer SUVs for a bit higher distance above ground.

The only varying road conditions you'll face are concrete or blacktop. Weather should not be a factor in car selection this time of year.

Have fun.

All the roads you will drive on this route are fully improved and maintained. They will be like driving on the roads where you live. If you find yourself on a gravel or dirt road, you are going in the wrong direction. Turn around.

Rent whatever car you are comfortable driving, carries your passengers and luggage and is within your budget.

Rent and drive what’s comfortable for you. As mentioned, your entire route is on well maintained highways. If you are on a dirt road, turn around. You’re going the wrong way.

Since you’ve posted in the Monument Valley forum, I’ll add a comment. The 17 mile loop road in the tribal park is prohibited by contract for all rental vehicles. Plan to book a Navajo guided tour.
