Personally, I think that late September through October are great times to be in area. The daytime temps are pleasant. Evening temps are cool. Weather is generally more reliable.

We love October as well. I prefer to avoid the bigger crowds and higher temperatures of summer. No matter what time of year you go, try to get a room at The View. The hotel is spectacular and each room as a balcony overlooking the valley. It lives up to it's name. The hotel books up very early so I would call right away.

Another vote for Fall. The light is exceptionally beautiful and sun angles right for photography...we are avid shutterbugs too. It is also much cooler and still not snowy. Are you driving a high clearance private car or a rental car?

A couple of comments for you as a photographer...the balcony rooms are fabulous for kicking back and just enjoying the sunset. However, the balconies do have privacy barriers on each side...sort of like blinders on a horse. So the panoramic shots are harder to get without hanging over the safety rail. Those are easier to get from the overlook near the restaurant. Most balconies also have roofs over them so star gazing is limited and also affected by the ambient artificial light.

Photos are really great from down in the 17 mile drive but you cannot drive a rental car down there. Sunrise from the hotel area has you shooting into the sun and its so difficult to get a decent shot unless you get to an area where the rising sun is more behind you. We have taken photos from the hotel area, over at Gouldings and all over the 17 mile drive area. The photos you get from down in the valley are probably the most stunning you can get. You may have to book a Navajo Spirit backcountry tour...and let them know you are a photographer, they will choose a guide for you who knows cameras and some areas for special shots.

There's never a bad time to visit MV, but temperatures will be most pleasant in spring and fall.
