It is about a 3 hour drive but we love San Antonio- the Alamo is a must see. We also like going down to Galveston to enjoy a ferry ride, visit some of the museums and visit the seawall area. Lots of good food also. We make a couple of trips a year to visit our daughter and love to find interesting things to do.

Y'all would probably enjoy a day at Kemah Boardwalk. This is halfway between Houston and Galveston. From there, go to Galveston for a couple days and visit Schlitterbahn waterpark, Seawolf Park (submarine and destroyer escort) and the 1877 tall ship Elissa. There is also the Duck tour which most kids enjoy.

San Antonio is more like a 4 hour drive, but worth the drive as there is so much to see and do. Seaworld, Six Flags Fiesta Texas (an amusement park), the Alamo and Missions, zoo, the Riverwalk, just to name a few.

Nearby to San Antonio are caves to explore (Natural Bridge Caverns, Cave Without A Name).

Another spot y'all might enjoy is Bandera, Texas. Spend time riding the horse trails, wagons and just being a cowboy. There are lots of dude ranches to choose from.

You could certainly travel to Louisiana for a couple days.

Hope this will get you started.

Welcome to Texas!!

You can make a fun day trip out of seeing Austin. On your way back to Houston, you can stop off at the Blue Bell Ice Cream Factory for a tour (and of course free sample). The factory is in Brenham which is in between Austin and Houston along Highway 36. Austin itself is about a 3 hour drive, so very doable.

A nine year old would definitely enjoy the Kemah boardwalk and probably Galveston. April is a nice time of year to visit and if you like parks a visit to Brazos Bend State Park might be an idea.

It's about six hours from Houston to NO.

If you are interested in the dude ranch idea, go to www.duderanches.com and check on the Texas section. You don't have to be experienced at riding to do these ranch visits; they take very good care of you. There are several good ones; we've stayed at the Mayan Dude Ranch a few times, but not in the last few years.

HI PB,

I agree with Galveston, and Moody Gardens' Penguin Encounter:

http://www.moodygardens.com/

The best beaches in Galveston are defiitely the ones a bit away from the Seawall, like Pirates Beach..wide, clean beach for your son to run on.

In Galveston, you all can go to The Strand area for lunch and some fun stores. You can walk over to the area where there is often a Navy vessel docked for duty..your son will probably enjoy this!

We like the Sunflower Bakery and Cafe, or The Spot on Seawall; where you can sit on the patio and enjoy some good food.

Both of these can be found using the search tool on the left of the main page of this website. You can also look for kid friendly, etc

(in Houston, try Barnaby's on W. Gray for a cool place; you'll enjoy the decor and the food is great too..burgers, lasagna, salads, fresh strawberry lemonade!)

Houston's Zoo and Children's Museum are among the best anywhere!

this is a great website that your son will enjoy looking at,with you.

San Antonio is fun, and if you drive there, don't miss stopping at a Buccee's for a snack, and lots of fun.

your whole family will enjoy it.

Louisiana is quite a drive, so I'm not sure if you want to do that this time, since your son is young.

hope this helps!

Cupcake

If you want small trips in the Houston area for 2-4 days that you are in Houston, then I would go to Galveston. There are lots of activities in Galveston that others have mentioned. You could spend a day on the Kemah Boardwalk.

If you wanted trips from Houston that you could do in 2-4 days, then I would go to San Antonio and stay on the Riverwalk. Or I would go to New Orleans and stay in the French Quarter. We have done both many times, and you will find that both are great tourist destinations.

There are casinos just across the Louisana border. Check out L'Auberge du lac in Lake Charles. It has a great outdoor pool area and game rooms for kids. Lafayette and Beaux Bridge have swamp tours. You can go to Avery Island and do a Tabasco Pepper Sauce tour. Lots of fun things to do in Southeastern Louisiana which would not be as far a New Orleans.

There are four day cruises from Galveston on Carnival Cruise line if you check their website.
