Something Different?

My friends and I are having our 3rd annual girls' weekend in Charleston this weekend. We are in our 30s. We are looking for something a little different to do this time. We have done a carriage ride, ghost walk, and toured the Edmonston-Alston House. We also have done lots of shopping and tried many restaurants. We just thought something different would be fun... Any ideas?

Toured a plantation? Middleton? Boone's Hall? Ever been to Patriot's Point? Taken a dinner cruise out on the harbor?

I don't think we would be interested in Patriot's Point. We might consider touring a plantation, but we don't want to spend 1/2 a day on it. Looking for shorter outings, I suppose. We are splitting our time between Folly Beach (were we are staying) and day trips to Charleston.

What dinner cruises do you recommend?

You could take a trip over to Wadmalaw and check out the Firefly distillery and the Irvin Vineyards, and maybe pick up some fresh shrimp on the way back.

I agree. The Angel Oak is down there as well, which is well worth a visit. There are some good restaurants on your way: Fat Hen, Mustard Seed, and Boulevard Diner.

While in Charleston go to the rooftop bar at Market Pavilion. The view is great and the weather will be cooperating.

You could also drive over to Sullivans, visit Ft. Moultrie, and have lunch at Poe's or Atlanticville (Sunday Only).

Interested in a half day kayak trip??? Yes, it's even for beginners, contact my friend Ralph and see if he's available...

Ralph has a trip that he does right near Folly Beach, you'd see dolphins right in their natural environment.

Aside from that idea, yes, the Wadmalaw idea is a good one, Angel Oak, the Tea Plantation and the Winery/Distillery (try the Java Rhum) will make a great trip. Don't know if the fishing boats have started up yet for that fresh shrimp, might be too early.

You could also swing by Freshfields for some shopping and lunch (between Kiawah and Seabrook), or make reservations at the Ocean Course on Kiawah for lunch at the clubhouse (allow 30 mins. to get from gate to clubhouse), the dining room isn't open for lunch, but the bar is and the view is just as wonderful...

This, combined w/the tour of Wadmalaw could be an entire day expedition.

Plan on a dinner at Bowens Island, if you haven't been there...

Firefly Distillery and the Angel Tree would be a fun outing! Thanks! Anything in the historic district that we should try? What do you bring your family to when they are visiting from out of town?

Something different…

• Definitely do the Firefly tasting!

• I second the kayak adventure. I think Magnolia Garden’s also offers a kayak or canoe adventure.

• On Folly, you’ve got Tides of March going on: follybeacharts.com/images/Tides2011Poster.pdf

Don't forget about the Tea Plantation out on Wadmalaw. I'm taking my girls this week. For some reason they've never been:-)

The tea plantation is great and would make for a nice off the beaten path jaunt. We were there last week -- pleasant. Too bad we missed the Firefly tasting (:
