Where should my family go for fun rockhounding in N. Oregon?

We are going to be in Cannon Beach for 4 days, and have a few days to play before then. We'd like to go rockhounding for petrified wood or any fun crystals, etc. Where should we go?

Another idea that your family might enjoy is geocashing, google it, they do it all over the world. ;)

I went on a trip in gradeschool and we got a ton of fossils but not sure where!! If I find out I will post again.

Here is a bit of info for you on Oregon Fossil hunting- http://www.all-oregon.com/fossils.htm

Your children might enjoy OMSI, but since you are in Kent I wouldn't waste the day, but come back ;)

Many of the beaches and river outlets all along the Oregon coast are good for agate hunting and several areas have good wood hunting too. But the best time of year is usually in the Winter after a storm. Many of the real good areas like Whiskey Run south of Coos Bay are hit by the pros so to speak. There are alot of good areas in the East near Madres and Prineville and farther southeast but those are quite far from Cannon Beach.

For some other type of fun I suggest going south about 40 miles to Tillamook. They have a large cheese factory there with tours and such that is fun and they also have an air museum inside a HUGE blimp hanger from WW2 that is great. There is also several fun seaside towns within a few hours south of Cannon Beach like Lincoln City and Depoe Bay which are fun towns to visit.

Hope this helps some. Have a great trip.
