Cradle Mountain and surrounds - November

My girlfriend and I are thinking of 4 days in the Cradle Mountain area to do some hiking and are open to any suggestions on accommodation and what we should bring. Really just looking for some great suggestions for day walks, activities etc. Thanks. Kerre

Cradle Mt is a great place for walks/hikes, but have a look at the link below, then let us know what you're thinking of doing.

Also for interest sake and weather watching, have a look at the webcam link below

We last visited in November three or was that four years ago? It's great to see someone with adequate time to enjoy the area rather than rushing in and out on a day trip or a one night stay.

When we visited we stayed at the Cradle Mountain Lodge in a spa cabin and were very pleased with the accommodation and the restaurant for dinner which provided good meals and a fantastic wine list. The Tavern bar and bistro was very ordinary. Tip take one up the hill in the back row that way you don't have guests walking past to go to and from the restaurant and bar (other than the wombats and paddy melons). The other advantage is a view over the complex and dam.

You will be walking at altitude and the weather can change in a heart beat. You need to be prepared on your walks with layers (merino thermals are the best base layer) that can be added or removed as required and a wind and waterproof outer shell (Goretex is the best), good water proof walking shoes or boots, a day pack, plenty of water, sunscreen and a hat. If venturing into the more remote areas make sure you tell someone where you are going, complete the book at the Dove Lake car park and carry an EPIRB (it's so much easier for the emergency services to find the body). When we did the Dove Lake circuit we experienced rain, sleet, snow, freezing wind and bright sunshine in less than an hour. Still being from Melbourne you would be used to changeable weather.

There are half a dozen accommodation options at Cradle. At the top of the range are Pepper's Cradle Mountain Lodge and the Cradle Mountain Hotel. Below them are Highlanders Cottages and Cradle Wilderness Village. Cheapest is Discovery Holiday Park - which has cabins and camping spots. If you are into very rustic camping, there is also Waldheim cabins which have shared showers, toilets and cooking facilities.

All of these places have animals wandering around in the morning and evening, but you are less likely to get outside to see them at the top two.

Many websites - including this one - are very confused about the geography of Cradle Mountain Lake St Clair National Park and list places that are miles away. No other places except those I have named are at Cradle Mountain.

I also 2nd Ozflyer suggestions regarding accommodation in Cradle Mountain Lodge. We also had a fab dinner in the main restaurant & a spa cabin away from the main reception / restaurant area. There are some wonderful walks from the Lodge. Use RobT's links for additional info.

Happy planning !
