stuff to do and see mid-afternoon/evening

I’m going to be in Hatfield 5th to 8th June – I’ve been once before in February - it was dark and generally miserable so except for the evening I visited wonderful St Albans Cathedral (and the one I spent in the pub) I was at a loose end.

I’m working mornings (at the University of Hertfordshire - de Havilland Campus) I would really appreciate any advice on comfortable places to stay in the area and on things to do/see during the mid to late afternoon and evening within an hour or so drive.

St Albans is the one town worth exploring unless the delights of The Galleria shopping centre (with cinema) in Hatfield take your fancy.

As for attractions, well you will have to decide if you have the time in the afternoon but Hatfield House is steeped with history and I would also consider Shaw's Corner, the home of GBS and now a NT property located in the charming village of Ayot St Lawrence.

As for accommodation then I would again consider St Albans especially if you want to enjoy a few pints in the evening but the Ramada is a chain option located very close to the campus - http://www.ramadahatfieldhotel.co.uk/
