Another newbie.....top 5 things to do in OBX

Hello we are going to stay in Kill Devil Hills later this month. Two families traveling together - total 8 people. Includes four kids ages 6 - 13. What are the top 5 things that you would recommend?

Thanks,

Collette

Take the kids up Jockey's Ridge - warning - it can be very hot - some great views though.

Take in a lighthouse or two - Currituck Lighthouse up in Corolla at the Whalehead Beach Club or drive down to the Hatteras Lighthouse. The grounds at the Whalehead Beach Club are very nice and there's a wildlife center for the kids that has some activities.

Take the kids ghost crabbing on the beach at night with flashlights - they'll have a blast.

Check out the Wright Brothers Memorial and Museum.

Enjoy the beach!

A few more:

Enjoy time with each other without any electronics.

Go get ice cream cones after dinner.

Play miniature golf.

Try waveriders on the sound. We've used Nor'banks up in Duck, but there are a number of places. The kids can't pilot themselves, but can be passengers. Don't know how young is the limit, but we took my 8yrold out and he loved it.

Boogie boarding.

And Duck Donuts....the kids will love them.

Climb a lighthouse - a trip down to Buxton to climb Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is a great place to start.

Also, maybe a dolphin tour for the kids. We used to do that a lot when I was little. You are pretty much guaranteed to see dolphins and they come really close to the boat. We've used Captain Johnny in Manteo several times. http://www.outerbankscruises.com/

Wild horse tours in Corolla are amazing. You won't experience anything else quite like that again.

Maybe a surfing or kiteboarding lesson?

And, of course, spend a ton of time at the beach!

Thanks everyone for posting. We are very excited about the trip. Looks like our group is in agreement about a 4 X 4 beach tour, Hatteras Light House and ferry ride to Ocracoke and Roanoke Island. Jockey's Ridge is close so that will also be on the list. Has anyone done hang gliding there? Anyway something might get scrapped if it gets too hectic. We rented Just Peachy in KDH which looks like an amazing oceanfront house so we want to spend sometime there.

Dolphins and wave runners also sound fun.....Thanks for the suggestions.

Go to the $ store, buy a plastic shoebox, fill it with little treasures that the kids would like, and then one nite plan a treasure hunt. Start with the first clue on the refirgerator and let the older kids help the younger kids decipher the clues. End up on the beach with X marks the spot to where the treasure is buried. Let an adult stay on the beach to guard the treasure. My kids were thrilled the first time we did this. On your walk to the beach each day notice the names of houses and mention them out loud. Then plug those names into your cues. See who has been paying attn!

Bodie Island Lighthouse is probably the closest to KDH and, in my opinion, is the most attractive. The staff at the bookstore is most helpful and can show you the perfect spot to get a family photo with the lighthouse in the background. Not climbable, however.

You can stop by on your way to Hatteras island.

The Chicamacimo Life Saving Station is a great stop on your way to Hatteras.

Have a great time.

This year was our 1st time to OBX and 2 of our favorite things - besides the beach - were Jockey's Ridge and ghost crabbing with flashlights at night. . We went to Jockey's Ridge in the morning, before it got too hot. It was awesome. Rather than trying to juggle the kids and the hang gliding - just take a kite. You can't help but get if off the ground.

Take the kids to the beach with their flashlights after dark and watch all the crabs take over the sand.

We didn't get to a lighthouse this time. We'll have to do it next year.

Have fun!!
