Outerbanks ---Where to Go---What House to Choose

We are traveling down to the Outerbanks..that is if we find an Oceanfront home to rent for a week 8/20 to 8/27. We want direct beach access. Very nice accommodations.

Can anyone recommend a specific area (ie, Duck, Waves, Rodanthe, Nags, etc) and a home they could recommend? Really could use some advice as this is very last minute planning.

We like Corolla, but everyone who goes often to the Outer Banks has their favorite area. Some like to be closer to the "action" (bars), others want to be somewhat remote. Some just want a nice, not too crowded beach.

You don't say what size house you are looking for, or what your price range is.

To find a home, I recommend that you check the websites of several rental agencies. You can specify location (oceanfront, "oceanside", etc.), area, #bedrooms, pet-friendly, other amenities (gameroom, media room, elevator, etc.), and price.

We recently rented Surf's Up-Whalehead from Twiddy Realty, in Corolla. Very nice oceanfront house, 7 bedrooms, private pool, etc. We actually rented the same house a few years ago when it was managed by another company. But any home that forum members recommend may or may not be available -- that's why it's best to go through the website to find availability.

Some companies to check out: Twiddy, Sun Realty, Village Realty, Corolla Classic Vacations, Midgett Realty, Hatteras Realty, Beach Realty.......

Thanks very much. The size house is going to depend on whether it is just our family of 5 or another family of 5 as well. We want direct beach access and while we will be cooking in as well as eating out, don't want to be on top of the bars but would like the ability to take our kids into town or let them drive down to town if they get bored. Kids range from 8 to 18. I have been in touch with a number oft he RE companies you mentioned. We just are not sure what the difference is in the areas. For example, Duck vs, Nag's Head vs. Kitty Hawk. Are the areas very far apart in terms of driving? I mean if we wanted to be somewhat remote, let's say in Corrolla, is that driving distance (reasonably) to some action?

Thanks very much, you have been very helpful.

We always stay in Duck. Have been for 20 years. Kids have enjoyed it at all ages. Last year we had 11 kids range from 14-19. All had a blast. The kids love renting the beach cruisers (bikes). The older ones loved going to the beach at night and meet people who were making bonfires. Not allowed. That is why they are looking for them because we wont let them make them. We always cook in and if the kids didn't like what we were having then they are on there own. The adults usually take one or two nights out at one of the nice restaurants.

You will find everyone has different ideas f an ideal vacation, just decide what is important to the group you are with.

Duck is a beachy, cute, smallish town with lots of shops, but very crowded.

I would try S Nags Head area. Well situated, and pretty close to everything. Second choice would be Corolla, as there is more to do there for kids. Duck is very nice, and has more of a village feeling with nice small shops, and places to eat. Corolla has more kid oriented things, and also has plenty of places to eat/shop. Corolla is a little drive from the rest of the beach, and as there is only 1 road up to the Duck/Corolla area, it can get slow.

The distance between the Towns is not far-only about 5.5 miles from Kitty Hawk to Kill Devil Hills, and then about another 5 (approx) to Nags Head. The northern beaches of Duck and Corolla are much farther apart.
