Bedbug-free accommodation in Poughkeepsie

We're driving down to Washington , D.C. in early May and are looking for a clean motel/hotel to stay for one night in the Poughkeepsie, N.Y. area. So far, every place I've checked online has bedbugs. Any suggestions? My husband doesn't want to sleep in the car.

We are currently looking for places to stay in this area and would like to know which places you have found out have bedbugs or where online we can look to find out. I am terrified of this situation. Thanks so much for your help.

The first post in this thread is absolutely bogus. I'm a local resident who recently had many visitors for Marist College's alumni weekend. They stayed at several area hotels and not one of them said anything about bedbugs. If they had seen any, I would have heard about it and so would local media. There are many places to stay along Route 9, including a Holiday Inn Express, newly renovated Marriott Courtyard, Marriott Residence Inn, Hampton Inn, and others. Downtown there is the Poughkeepsie Grand. You can rest assured you won't get bitten at any of those locations.

There is no correlation between CLEAN and BEDBUGS. Some of the finest hotels have had guests bring them in.

That's right, it's not the hotel's fault, it is brought in by guests. It is only the hotels fault if they don't treat the problem immediately when found. (Most responsible establishments treat the problem immediately.)

That being said, the worry is minimal at well maintained properties and it's absolutely nonsense to worry about it... because if that was true, the hotels would be inspecting YOU.

Don't put luggage on beds. Don't put luggage on carpets. Don't bring your own pillow. Be aware. Check the bed. You are just as responsible as the hotel in taking precautions.

As the last post said bedbugs travel very well. My upcoming trip is covering a lot of miles and staying in several hotels of varying quality - hence I looked at the bed bug sites which whilst useful did not clear the issue with me.

Avoiding a hotel that has constant reports of bed bugs is good advice but you may well be the next person into a room where only the last person brought the little pests in - so no 100% guarantee.

I have decided to invest in some personal spray but am not sure how to avoid carrying them onto the next hotel in clothes or baggage - I am presuming there is a spray I can use on the case but what about clothes that are kept in hotel furniture?

A friend put their cases in the bathroom in each hotel they stayed in - does this really work?

What about carrying them on your clothing?

Any useful tips would be appreciated. I certainly will take precautions to not bring them 'home' i.e. strip off in garage etc.and put straight in washing machine, treat case before putting away etc.

Wash all clothing in hot water & dry in a dryer for 40 -45 minutes. The temperature has to exceed 140 degrees. I worked in an adult day program where we tried to think of how we could measure the temperature without breaking the thermometer. We finally agreed to put the persons clothes in a tied white pillow case. At the end of the dryer time, we carefully removed all of the clothes. There were dead bed bugs inside of the case. We notified her property manager & family. We also instituted a policy to not bring bags, yarn, backpacks, purses, or electronics to our site. Coats should not hang next to other people's coats in public places. I often take my driver's license, insurance cards, & ATM card in my front pocket & hand carry my keys. That's usually about all I need. I'm an Registered Nurse who is terrified by these bugs. You have to get rid of furniture, clothes, linens, & carpets & start over. It is quite expensive. Exterminators have to treat homes 3 times. In Ky, it's $400 a pop. I wanted to go to New York at some point & have only found one bed-bug free hotel in NYC.

Thanks for that reply - you have just made my mind up for me. I was shopping for a few items I need for the trip i.e. personal hand sterlising gel and wipes etc. that sort of thing and stopped at the bed bug spray display and thought 'Hey I am being over cautious' and walked by. After hearing all that and especially from a nurse I may just go back and buy the spray!!!

I take a 4 week road trip every summer, and last year I brought home guest bedbugs. It was an awful experience because we had company immediately after my return, so the critters were spread among three households. The cost for all of us was over $2000 for treatment, and that doesn't count the luggage and clothes we just threw away. Orkin told us we had to take everything out of every drawer and closet, put loads into trash bags for transport to the dryer. We had to dry the clothes (didn't have to wash them, it's the heat, not the water that kills them) and immediately put them into a different trashbag. Those we stored in the trunk of our car for a week. We had to pull up the carpet all around each room and take light plates off; everything had to be taken down from walls, including curtains. I lost a headboard I had just upholstered because the bugs got down into the stuffing. This was the worst experience I've ever had, especially since one of the households was that of my 86 yr. old mother. My house still isn't back as it should be. We stayed in only Hilton hotels except for two nights at a Grand Canyon Lodge. I don't really have any advice for travelers except what has been mentioned: keep a big bag in your car and pack just an overnight bag from it for each stop. When you check out, head to the laundry and run your clothes, bag and all, through the dryer for at least 40 minutes. Buy a few of the plastic, soft-sided zippered storage containers to stow away non clothes items because bedbugs attach to more than clothes, like computer bags and kids' toy bags. NEVER take a child's carseat or booster into a room. Leave it in the car. Same for strollers and pack & plays. You'd be better off asking for a crib at the hotel that you can leave there. Don't forget to run stuffed animals and blankies through the dryer too. I wasn't aware of a site that shows hotels that have been infected, but I'd like to see one for my next trip this summer though The Hudson River Valley and New England.

Last year I saw an episode of Shark Tank where they had a product called Buggy Beds or something like that. They are little traps you put under the mattress and luggage to attract and trap bed bugs if they exist. If you don't trap any..I suspect there is none. I used them on our Disney trip and will be using them on our upcoming trip up to Poughkeepsie just to be sure we don't bring any critters back home. I placed the traps when we arrived and left for the day and frequently checked on them throughough our trip. Thankfully, they didn't catch anything, and I totally would have freaked out if it had! That and not stayed in the room. I'm lucky we haven't experienced anything like what I am reading here and since seeing that episode have come to be extra cautious when traveling with my family...and yes I even take off the sheets that the hotel when we check in and don't remove anything from our bags until the room has been thoroughly searched. Bugs are sooo gross but I am not going to keep the possibly from traveling. Can't predict it so, mind as well take precautions. I got on here to see if the town was safe for my family since we are thinking of staying there and riding the train into NYC. Saw this post and thought I would give my two sense. :)
