Taos at Christmas

We are interested in finding a vacation rental with full kitchen, fireplace, 1-2 bedrooms, jacuzzi would be nice too ( for 2-3 people) for about 5-6 days around the Christmas Holidays, somewhere between Taos and Santa Fe. We are not skiers but would be interested in hiking (snow shoeing), if there are any marked trails. We are currently checking vrbo.com and homeaway.com but any suggestions would be helpful.

There seem to be many holiday events going on at this time but suggestions here, as well, would be appreciated. We plan to be there only 4-5 days so any highlights on historical places to visit, opera, recitals or dance events suggestion here too We can arrange the dates between Dec. 18- Dec. 30 to take in special events. Thank you for your advice. Carol

1. Re: Taos at Christmas

Travel + Leisure Magazine designated Taos as one of the Top 10 places to spend Christmas last year. For good reason: the Taos Peublo has Christmas Eve and Christmas Day events that are nothing short of spectacular and spiritual. Combining Christian and ancient Native American traditions, the events at the Pueblo are reason enough to come that time of year. The entire town turns out for these events as they are part of the magic that is Taos.

In terms of hiking, showshoeing, and cross-country skiing there are miles and miles of trails designated for non-vehicular, non-snowmobile traffic. Amole Canyon in the Carson National forest is about 15 miles southeast of town on SH 518. Taos Ski Valley is a world-class destination with many trails that are not downhill runs. North of town just outside Red River, NM is the Enchanted Forest cross-country area with miles and miles of groomed trails and warming huts. They have many holiday events as well.

Finding a place to stay is always a chore, but if you stick to it, you'll be able to find any number of suitable vacation rentals. As you're already looking, stick with VRBO, but you can also try a local company that specializes in Taos Vacation Rentals with spots all over the area, including some in the Ski Valley.

Most activities that time of year are posted and information is kept current on the Taos Vacation Guide website: http://www.taosvacationguide.com

It is the offical guide of the Town of Taos and the Taos Lodger's Association, so it contains detailed listings of what has been set.

Some B&B's offer vacation rental alternatives. Casa Benevides has purchased and renovated properties throughout the immediate east-side of the Historic District. http://www.taos-casabenavides.com.
