What are the best casinos for horse racing, on and off the strip, I'm not much of a gambler but I do enjoy the horses, I thought I'd try my luck at one of the sport books if anyone has a recommendation. I'll be in town the week of July 28th and am staying at the Tahitian Village (no casino)

5 helpful votes Sean: None of the casino race books set their own odds or set up separate pools anymore. All of the money bet goes directly into the pools at the individual race tracks. So from an odds or cost standpoint it doesn't matter which casino you choose.
So it would come down to comfort or preference. Simply put, the nicer hotels have nicer race-books. My wife's personal favorite is Wynn. She prefers the setting, and the desks there. But most important to her is that she can plug a headset into her TV (not possible at most places) and shut out the rest of the world and watch her race.
I've never been to where you are staying, but I believe it is south of the Strip hotels, so the nearest nice hotel to you would be Mandalay Bay, which does have a comfortable race-book.
South Point is also close by. Not fancy, but the race-book is a favorite of locals.
I agree with Ktinca. Wynn or Mandalay Bay would be great for watching horse racing. I don't know the drink ticket policy for either (is that important to you?). Both have nice books. I like LVH for their liberal drink policy, but MB and Wynn are much nicer.

Best drink policy for me is the Mirage. The few times we were in there, we were getting a coupon for every $5 or $10 at the most. It allowed us to bet $20-$40 a race and get 4 coupons for free drinks plus a chance to win money.
Had 2 great winning days in there.
Its in my rota for 5 weeks time.......cant wait. :-)
I like Aria sports book for horse racing since they have a seperate area (but still in SB) dedicated to horse racing viewing. It's usually empty (unless for big horse racing events). All SB's I've been to have had very liberal (easy) drink ticket policies for horse racing. Aria has even comped me a buffet just for betting horse racing. Chairs are comfy too.
Westgate (formerly LVH) is probably the biggest and the grill is surprisingly pretty good. The drinks comps are very generous too.
