How would you improve Tunica?

This forum doesn't seem very busy, so I probably won't get many answers. We started going to Tunica several years ago. Our first stay was at The Grand, if that gives you an idea. We took a break for a couple of years and I was shocked at how much has closed up since we were last there! I've been surprised that more things aren't offered in Tunica for the tourists. For one thing...I would think a water park would do well there. It's hot in Mississippi and surely there are a lot of families who want to entertain their children while an adult member is gambling? Or in Vegas, some of the "local" hotels have movie theaters and bowling alleys. We enjoy getting free buffets and everything...but after a couple of days, I'd just like to eat at an Applebee's or somewhere like that. So I'm just curious as to what others think would do well in Tunica....and why hasn't more ever gone in?

I have been wondering too, for a long time.

Almost your exact same thoughts, since I go to Vegas frequently.

With the addition of golf courses & the outlet mall, it seems the area had its sights on becoming a family destination, especially from the neighboring states.

Maybe a CVB official will reply & update us on future plans.

I'm afraid the good old days at Tunica are over. Free rooms at either Horseshoe or Roadhouse now include a hefty resort fee of $15 to $20! Also if you phone for reservations that will cost you another $10. They want you to use the internet to do your booking! Soon they will charge you for parking like Vegas has done. I know other Tunica Casinos now have resort fees as well, check before you go. I will never drive three hours to get there for a "free" room. I can stay in Hot Springs and play machines that are paying 93% vs. in the low 70's at Tunica. It was fun while it lasted. Good luck!

Wow. I love the casinos in Tunica. I actually prefer it to the Las Vegas of today because casinos in Vegas are out to gouge the gambler as gambling revenues continue to fall (6:5 blackjack...poor video poker pay tables etc.). This will only make the situation worse because the worsened odds will discourage new gamblers.

I wish I knew how we could "save" Tunica. It was a great 20 year "run."

We moved to Robinsonville for a year after taking a few vacations to Mississippi. I'm a casino person, my bf isn't. But we love the blues, the music. .driving down the blues highway, looking for the Graves of the musicians from the past.

Obviously, it's a very poor part of the state. It's like time stood still from the 50s or 60's in some of the old towns.

The big empty casinos, parking lots growing full of weeds, and the closed down golf course is sad to see.

I don't know who actually owns these properties, but I thought too, that a waterpark or amusement park would be great for family vacations.

Another idea would be to convert those casinos into maybe senior living apartments, or retirement living centers..but not overly expensive. They could have shuttles to take the residents to casinos, grocery store, shopping etc.

Fishing is another idea..you are on the Great Mississippi River, and the places for people to fish, river access, is all bought up by private clubs! This is not fair to everyone.

Only the rich can fish.

Like I said, we lived there for a year, and couldn't believe how limited the river access was for fishing!

There are also some large ponds on the abandoned golf course, would be perfect for fishing!

We used to go to the River Park and walk on the trails.

The Mississippi River park museum is wonderful! I hope it's still open!

We got to go on one Riverboat ride, then the boat was basically abandoned. Was really sad to watch.

There's a lot of history and alot for people to see in the Delta.

You should have more tours to take people around to the sites etc..

We miss it there and are talking about moving back, but I wondered what else might have closed down in the year since we moved back to Iowa?

Your area has so much history that I think everyone should visit and experience life in the Delta.

It probably wouldn't hurt to get a Walmart, or some other grocery stores. .some things are pretty limited. Good luck!

I haven't been on this forum in a while and we haven't been to Tunica in more than a year, but I'll my two cents. When the casinos were first built, they talked of family entertainment, water parks, etc., but none of that happened. The Grand, which later became Harrah's, was the closest to family friendly with its big arcade, child care services, skeet shooting, etc., but now its closed. I still wish they had shuttle buses between the casinos, allowing guests to see the various properties without having to drive from place to place. They used to run regular shuttles from Memphis to the casinos, but I don't think that is a regular thing anymore either. I think all of these changes have contributed to the slide in Tunica.
