MGM's Goldstrike & airfare freebie promo/transportation

I'm headed to Tunica in two weeks for the first time all compliments of MGM's free airfare/hotel promo. I've done the Biloxi promo a few times so I have an idea of what to expect; but my biggest concern is transportation for getting around to the different casinos/Memphis/etc. After reading some older posts it doesn't look promising unless it has changed.

Was hoping to hear from others who have used the promo and what they did for transportation. Although we fly into Tunica Airport, you have to take their shuttle to the Goldstrike, so that leaves out renting a car at the airport when we get there.

Thanks!

Brian

I don't think you'll have any other options than renting a car at the airport. Transportation in Tunica is not convenient. I see there's a Memphis cab service listed on their ground transporation page, but I have serious doubts that a cab would come from Memphis to Gold Strike to the Tunica airport. That would be a lot of miles.

They really won't let you pick up a car at the airport instead of taking their shuttle. Seems like they'd be a little accommodating in an area without good transportation.

When we go on the Tunica freebies to Harrah's we have rented a car at Tunica airport with no problem. We get off the plane, get our envelope with our room designation and pick up the rental. Return rental to the airport on the day we are leaving. Of course, it also depends on your arrival/departure times as Avis is only open certain hours (we were shut out once because our flight was not getting in until 6:30PM). Call and ask MGM - I bet they have no problem with that arrangement.

We received an offer from Harrah's which includes airfare as well but we were thinking of renting a car to spend a day in Memphis. Do you know if any of the hotels have onsite car rentals? If not, how difficult is it to get a cab/shuttle to the Tunica airport to pick-up a rental?

I see that the car rental agencies at the airport have limited hours and I don't know our flight will accommodate those hours.

As far as I know, the only rental car facilities are at the Tunica airport. Unfortunately, there's not much in the way of shuttles or cabs in Tunica either. You can check into some of the companies listed at the bottom of the page linked below, but I think you're going to be out of luck. For example, the cab company they list is really based in Memphis and I'm not sure how easily they'll send a cab to Tunica, an hour away. Also, you can ask your question to their CVB on the second link.

Thanks for your response, though it's not very assuring. We got our flight info and we would be able to pick up a car but it's the return that's tricky because we leave late Sunday afternoon. I'm really surprised that there are no options.

You're so welcome. You might end up sitting at the Tunica airport until departure. Nor sure how that will work. You could call Horseshoe direct and ask if they know of a shuttle service to get you back to the hotel.

If you've never been to Tunica, you might be surprised to see how remote the casinos are. In fact, they're not in the town of Tunica, but in Robinsonville, in the county of Tunica. Robinsonville is a good 15 - 20 minute highway drive from the town of Tunica. Less than 2000 live in the Robinsonville area and casino business has been in a steady decline since the flood in 2011. Only about 1000 people live in Tunica. Its very remote and most of the casino properties are immediately adjacent to cotton fields. There's simply not enough business in the area to make cabs, shuttle, etc. financially viable. When the casinos first opened in the 1990's, some of the properties ran shuttles from Memphis to the casinos, but that has also stopped.

Blues City has some tours that start in Tunica to Memphis if that works out better for you. Obviously we always drive to Tunica, but I can't imagine not having a car to use there.

Thanks Deb, No we have never been to Tunica, but from my research, I know that we don't want to be "stuck" without a car.

Since this is a junket, we are flying directly into the Tunica airport. I'm calling Horseshoe, Bluecity Tours and Avis to find out what our option will be for Sunday. i really don't want to hang out at the airport for 6 hours!
