Is Mississippi the Worst State in the US?

I have been reading and hearing that Mississippi is the worst state in the US, according to the media. Does anyone agrees with their version of Mississippi?

We are passing through Jackson in a week or so. We know nothing of the area. Where is the best affordable hotel in a nice area? Are there any areas we should avoid? Thank you

Regarding Mississippi, the reason we have such low ratings is mainly because we've never done a good job of education attainment, largely do to our long (and sometimes recent) past of being overly reliant on unskilled farm labor to pick cotton by hand.

Since the mechanization of Cotton, little has been done by our state government to attract or retain jobs that require a bachelor's degree or higher, while much has been done historically since the mechanization of cotton agriculture to attract lower-paying manufacturing jobs which usually only require a high school degree for most jobs.

Largely due to our history as an agricultural state, Mississippi has had lower standards of living due to our historical reliance on agriculture and manufacturing jobs to sustain our economy.

Nontheless, Mississippi is a good place to visit. We have several sites related to Civil War History, Blues and Civil Rights History, and plenty of delicious Southern food.

I Highly recommend if you go to Mississippi, you should visit Natchez, which has several historic antebellum homes you can visit year round, Vicksburg, with the largest Civil War site west of the Appalachians, and Jackson, home to several great restaurants, the state museum of Natural History, the state capitol, the Old Capitol Museum, and the Mississippi Museum of Art.

Also, see Rowan Oak and the University of Mississippi in Oxford, near Memphis, Clarksdale and its Delta Blues' Museum, and the Gulf Coast in our Panhandle, home of the Stennis Space Center's Infinity Space and Science Museum, Ocean Springs and the Walter Anderson Museum, and Biloxi and the Ohr-O'Keefe Art Museum.

Also Ship Island, home to a Civil War-era fort that was the site of a battle of the New Orleans Campaign of the Civil War.

John,

Great points.

While I think that the OP was a troll, you make excellent points for others, who might look at this thread.

No my friend Mississippi is not the worst state by a long shot. I'm from Mount Olive,Ms and have also lived in Jackson! I currently live in Bloomington, Il. Let me tell you, Illinois has the worst schooling systems, the most corrupt governors, labeled worst place to live for black people, the most jails and prisons. Everyone that come to Illinois say the same thing. The people are slow, dumb and 🌽 nie!

I have spent a lot of time in Chicago as well as different areas of MS. I have never been robbed or beaten up in MS. Both have ocuured in Chicago. People are friendly and polite in MS. People in Chicago are not.

The people murdered in Chicago in a week us about equal to the number murdered in MS in a year.

People in MS would be polite enough not to ask this question. Just sayin...
