Best Overnight Locale - Mackinaw, Mackinac or St. Ignace?

We are spending one night in the general area. We do plan to visit Mackinac Island, but a day trip should satisfy us. Which is the best to spend the night Mackinaw City, Mackinac Island or St. Ignace? We don't want a cheapo place, nor are we seeking luxury. Just looking for a nice overnight spot. It's difficult to differentiate the hype of touristy spots from the possibility of nothing there in the non-tourist places.

I appreciate your input!

I'd probably stick with Mackinaw City. It has a lot of restaurants, shops, putt-putt, motels/hotels and is easily walkable from many of them. St. Ignace would be quieter, but the hotels are more spread out.

Places to consider for good rooms and customer service: Deerhead B&B, Riviera Motel, Holiday Inn Express,Days Inn & Suites, Clearwater Lakeshore Motel.

The island... it has a very different feeling after the last ferry leaves for the day than it does during the day... I'd take the time to stay here!

We just returned from a bus trip and spent 3 nights at the Best Western Harbour Pointe Lakefront Hotel in St. Ignace. It was quiet and had beautiful views of the island from the balcony. If you are interested in casinos, it is just a few miles from Kewadin Casino. Had a wonderful time.

I feel all three have their own unique experience. It depends on what wlse you would like to do. Machinaw City has the fort, lighthouses, Mill Creek, and lumberjack show. From St Ignace, it easy to go to the casino. Sault Sainte Marie, Tahquamenon Falls, and the many "tourist traps". The Island itself is worth spending at least one night on and you have the history, hiking, biking, and horses. No comercial hotels on the island, just independent hotels and B&Bs.

If you have the option of staying on the island I would suggest you consider that. It has a different feel once the day trippers leave. And the mornings before the island "opens for business" are very peaceful.
