We are a family of 5 adults. Can you or should we prebook a carriage ride before we get there in 3 weeks? What is a reputable place? Thank you. Any other ideas are appreciated.
The carriage rides would be on Mackinac Island. No need to pre-book, as "island time" will affect your trip over.
You can get on a larger carriage with many people and a canned spiel from the driver, or do a private hire carriage. I think there are ones that some with a driver, or you can self-drive. (The horses know how to get home; low risk.)
Don't overlook the bike rentals, too. It's fun to ride all the way around the island, stop and look at stuff.
Thank you very much
As stated, there are 3 options...drive your own buggy, private tours and group carriage tours. If you decide on the group tour, you can save a little money by buying a combined ferry and carriage tour ticket. Shepler's ferry offers their "discount island package" for $49/adult and $23.75 for kids for the hour and 45 minute tour. You simply turn right from the docks and walk down main street to the ticket counter. They take your tickets and you board the next available carriage. They run all day.
The drive your own buggies rent by the hour from a livery behind the main street. They are pricey but fun. We have done this twice. The first time, we got a little lost and simply told our horse, "go ahead, Duke" at each intersection. He took us right back to the stable.
I have not taken a private tour but I'm told they are costly but very worth it to some who wish for alone time. Not sure where they board?
Anyway you choose, the island is beautiful and you should enjoy it.
