4th of July Traffic from Mackinaw City to Sault Ste. Marie

Hello,

We will be taking a day trip from Mackinaw City to the Canadian Bushplane Museum in Sault Ste. Marie on the 4th of July. What is traffic like getting there and back on the holiday? Does anybody have any helpful tips?

Thanks!

Sault Ste Marie tends not to be a busy border crossing so you shouldn't have too difficult of a time. Saturday July 1 is Canada Day and this is Canada's 150th so expect some more people there

The actual traffic will in all likelihood be pretty light between Mackinaw City and Sault Ste. Marie MI USA. Coming back there may be a little bit more traffic if people are either going home or coming down to the Mackinaw area to see fireworks or something else. But, overall the traffic should be light, so you should be able to travel at the speed limit.

One of the few freeways in the UP are between St. Ignace and Sault Ste Marie so that should be a plus.

Do you know if they take credit cards for the toll or should we be sure to have cash on hand?

I've never used anything other than cash to pay for bridge tolls on any of the bridges into or out of Michigan. I know there are cards for frequent travelers, but that's not you. It's only $3.50 American so just take cash it's probably a lot easier. And don't forget your passports. And if you're traveling with children and there's only one parent in the car, I would recommend having a notarized letter from the other parent stating that they are aware and it's okay that their child is going into Canada.

They have been promising to start taking credit cards realy soon, for over 4 years. There have been many glitches and unexplained delays.
