Martha's Vineyard & Nantucket

Is it recommended to see both islands, MVY & Nantucket in one day? There is 6 of us and found where the Hy-Line offered a tour of Around the Sound but it isn't offered in October. Also not sure if we can get from MVY to Nantucket. Can't find a ferry schedule. Will we have to go back to Hyannisport each time? OR should we stay on the one of the islands. We have a condo in Yarmouth. Still planning our trip in October, just need to know if we need to allow 1 day or 2 days to go out to the island.

1. Re: Martha's Vineyard & Nantucket

Each island is a day trip. The fast ferry to Nantucket from Hyannis is 1 hr one way, the slow ferry is twice as long. The ferry schedule is much more flexible for Marthas Vineyard If you drive to Falmouth and take the Steamship Authority from there. (its about a 45 min drive and 45 min on the ferry from Falmouth or 1.5 hrs on the ferry from Hyannis but you only have about 4 hrs on the island, vs ferries that run from 7am to 8 or 9pm from Falmouth) The ferry rates and schedules can be viewed at :

www.islandferry.com/ssa/ - Steamship Authority

www.hy-linecruises.com - Hyline Cruises

As you will see taking a car to either island is quite expensive and not recommended.

On Nantucket there is no public transportation, to see the whole island either book a guided tour or rent a car (usually cheaper than bringing one on the ferry)

Marthas Vineyard has an excellent public bus system or take the tour bus from the ferry dock. The guided tour is a great introduction to the island and takes you all around it, after the tour take the publis bus or taxis to any towns you want to visit more.

Have fun - they are both beautiful places.
