How are the beaches in Dennis Port?

We will be traveling to Dennis Port with young children this summer. I was wondering what swimming is like in this part of Cape Cod. Are the beaches beautiful? Also, is the town really touristy and crowded in the summer? Does it maintain a small town feel? Would we be better off in places like Wellfleet or Truro? Thank you!!!

It really depends on where you are in town, if you are driving along Rt. 28 it is going to be busy & crowded, however the neighborhoods where most of the summer rentals are will be quiet. Beaches on the bayside in East Dennis would be great for small children. Wellfleet & Truro are both quieter, tho their oceanside beaches may be a little too intense for small kids (but they are among the most beautiful on Cape Cod!) Wellfleet's bay beaches would also be a good choice.

Dennisport's beaches are on Nantucket Sound. The Sound's water is typically warmer than the Atlantic Ocean's water. The surf is milder too. Much tamer for young children. The main road in Dennisport is Rt. 28. As the above response mentions, yes it will be a very busy road. But the good side of that is you are nearby the mini golfs and ice cream places. The neighborhoods south of Rt. 28 are usually quiet. You will do fine near Lower County Rd.

Wellfleet and Truro are beautiful and further away from the commercialism on Rt. 28. You have decide about proximity to restaurants, ice cream, shopping, etc. Dennisport is closer to these things. Here is an article about Dennisport from last year www.capecodonline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article…

The Atlantic Ocean at Cape Cod National Seashore is worth a day trip. Just be ready for the rougher, colder water. The Cape Cod Bay beaches are quite calm. In my opinion, no matter where you stay, you'll find the beauty and comfort of the Cape.

West Dennis beach is beautiful and great for walking. It's a very long beach.

The good news about Dennisport is that you are truly in a beachfront neighborhood and right on (usually) quite calm Nantucket Sound rimmed with lovely beaches all the way from the Harwich line to the Bass River/Yarmouth town line where W Dennis beach ends. While Rt 28 is Main St in Dennisport you could spend your entire vacation traveling south of the busy road on the beach roads of Lower Country Rd and Old Wharf Rd where you can drive to a variety of lodging choices, casual to upscale dining, a bit of shopping and a grassy kid's park. There's places to gather menu items if you rent a cottage and cook in including a wonderful bakery, produce stand, mini markets a fresh fish market, pizza places, an old time hot dog stand (with clam chowder etc too) and the terrific Sundae School for home made ice cream. Walk to the beach from a cottage, or book into a beachfront motel with heated pool and an option for a kitchenette.

If beaches are important to you then Dennis has 16 beautiful beaches including one of the most lovely on the Cape, Mayflower on the Bay side. One parking pass gives you access to the parking lots on Nantucket Sound, Cape Cod Bay and two fresh water lake beaches. Wellfleet does not have a Bay beach that approaches the beauty of the Bay beaches in Dennis but you can drive to Skaket Beach in Orleans. Also the best Wellfleet beaches are the Atlantic beaches with their big, dramatic surf. Here your kids can join others riding their boogie boards if they are old enough. Even in August the ocean water temp is bone chilling but most kids seem to be able to take it. If you can arrive around 10 or 11 AM for parking then try popular Cahoon Hollow beach and park in the lot at the restaurant www.beachcomber.com and you will get a voucher in the amount of the parking fee to spend for lunch there. While mid-Cape Dennis has the reputation of being especially family friendly on the Cape, families have a great time all over Cape Cod so, while Dennis may be better suited to young families, you can't go wrong with any vacation spot on the Cape. Enjoy.

P.S. There will be traffic on the main roads all over the Cape in summer. Traveling east on Hwy 6 the road narrows from two lanes each way to one and that continues on up to Wellfleet where 6 is the only Main Road.

Hello. We're looking to rent a cottage on Ocean Drive in Dennisport. It's west of the Swan River. Are the beaches nice here? We have two under 12 kids so will enjoy walking along the beaches.

Most importantly, are the beaches public access? I've been reading reviews of hotels that say they have a private beaches? It would be frustrating to have to leave the beach and walk back up to the road every few hundred yards.

Thanks in advance for any guidance or info.

I'm not sure where you will be exactly however I can say that the beach directly west of Swan River is one of my favorites and that is South Village Beach. This is the public beach though you may be confused if you see that there is Resident's Only parking there. Just know that there is also parking for the public as well. Continuing west of that public beach with a lifeguard is private beach areas that are for renters or residents of all the West Dennis cottages. However you can and we do walk all along this lovely strand to The Lighthouse Inn. If you want you can walk up onto their patio and have lunch. They also rent jetskis there. I think you have made a good choice.
