Hi there- we're traveling up to the area for the first time near the end of July and are curious how bad the mosquitoes/bugs are at this time of year just so we know how to prepare. Are we able to be outside near the lakes/ponds comfortably if we use spray? Many thanks!

The bug situation is a lot better at the end of July than June. A good bug spray should do the trick. Make sure to wear a hat and put some spray on that.

Eat lots of garlic starting a week before your arrival. It's also available in supplement capsules at the drugstore.

Use "bounce" or other smelly stuff on your clothes. Nothing that is "naturally" fragrant however such as strawberry extract shampoo.

Also they don't like Listerine. Gargle with it, spread it on your face and lips and ears where you don't want to put the deet spray.

Mosquitoes love SOME of us and we know all the tricks.

Just returned home. There were annoying little gnat type bugs but the mosquitoes were not bad. We did use bug spray when around the lake.

Thoughts on how bad (or not) mosquitos will be in early Oct?

I live in the woods in the mid-coast and they are wicked bad right now. Cannot be outside past dusk without spray. Not bad during the day though.
