Georgetown or Milbridge for vacation rental? Help!

Hi we are looking to rent a place in Maine, but having difficulty deciding where to stay, so far we are looking at vacation rentals by owner 2 in Georgetown- mussel cove and gull's nest, and then one in Cundy's Harbour and one in Milbridge. any opinions on which area or place might be best for a family with an 8 year old, a 16 month old, and a newborn- all boys!

Since you read the thread about Georgetown, I'd say all of the places you are looking at are similar - small coastal towns. Georgetown and Cundy's Harbor would be closer to larger towns for rainy day diversions. Milbridge is quite a bit further Down East, so if driving with a car full of boys is not your idea of a good time, I'd strike that from your list.

Picking up on CB's thought -- which area might be "best" will depend a bit on what kind of vacation you have in mind.... do you just want a place on or near the Maine coast where the family can spend the week together enjoying your rental, walking along the shore or around the community, etc., or do you want somewhere you can use as a base for multiple day trips with a variety of "things to do" for the 8 year old?

As already noted, Milbridge is about 3 hours driving time further

downeast" than your other two options....and further away from some of the more popular mid-Coast visitor destinations like Camden, Rockland etc....but closer to Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park if they was on your list of things to see.

In general terms, Milbridge is more "rural" than either Cundys Harbor or Georgetown and, mostly because of the added distance, Milbridge attracts fewer summer visitors than the other two destinations. Not that Milbridge isn't a nice place to visit for a laid-back, relaxing vacation (because it is), but most people just don't want to drive the extra miles to get there.

Again -- if we have a better idea of the kind of vacation experience you're looking for, we probably can do a better job of helping narrow down your options for you.

Milbridge does not have a lot of services nearby, so if you go down there be aware that you need to be very good at entertaining yourselves. That's a good place is you are bringing your own bikes, kayaks, etc. (or if those are provided with the rental) or don't mind driving a bit to get to things.

However, if you need a certain amount of distractions/concessions nearby, you'll be much nearer to things in Cundy's Harbor or Georgetown.

Georgetown has Reid State Park with several miles of beaches, so that's a huge plus. Plus the Five Islands Lobster Company, which is good for an outing. Kayaking around Five Islands would be fun.

Cundy's Harbor is about the same, except it's a little bit farther to a beach ( Popham Beach State Park.)
