best place to stay with kids in Dec. - near Vero Beach?

We're planning to take our 2 kids (age 8 and 6) to Florida for 4 days around Christmas. We want to visit friends in Orlando and friends in Palm Beach Gardens. We looked at a map and Vero Beach looked like it was about halfway between those 2 places. Is Vero Beach the best place for us to stay, or are there other places in that part of Florida that would be more fun for kids in December? The goal is to keep the drives to Orlando and Palm Beach Gardens manageable.

You will have 1 1/2 hour drive to each from Vero Beach. Is your goal to be able to spend some time at the beach? If not I think I would spend 2 nights Orlando and 2 nights Palm Beach rather than do all that driving. Vero Beach is nice & less expensive than Palm Beach if you are wanting to stay beachside. Its also a very small town. So other than the beach and some nature places to visit it's not an active town like Orlando or Palm Beach.

I would say that the Vero Beach Disney Resort would probably be the best place to stay with kids. They have a really great pool with a big waterslide and a beautiful beach. The only downside to the Disney Resort is that it's pretty isolated. You would have to drive about 15-20 minutes to get to the main part of Vero Beach with more shopping, restaurants, and other things to do. Here's their website: www.disneybeachresorts.com/vero-beach-resort/

From here, Palm Beach Gardens is close and an easy drive via the Turnpike or I-95. The Disney area of Orlando is a bit farther (almost precisely 1.5 hour) and very easy via State Road 60 (a new four-lane) and the usually relaxed traffic on the Turnpike.

So staying in Vero while driving to PB and Disney is feasible and maybe not much more of a hassle than staying in two separate hotels.

There are decent hotel/motel options within Vero, including several at the relatively quiet South Beach with a nice park and a tiny but busy pizza take-out. The beachfront business district caters largely to affluent-to-wealthy retirees but has nice, kid-friendly beachfront and Indian River parks. Certainly room to roam. I would emphasize that the beach district is pedestrian-oriented.

The Disney Resort might well be fully booked. It's imposing and has a more interesting beach than Vero proper due to the layout of the offshore reefs (stone, not coral). The little public park next to the hotel is a popular bodyboarding and skimboarding spot with some extraordinary practitioners like Brad Domke, here seen performing at Sebastian Inlet:

Of course the days you visit, there will be no waves at all.
