Where to stay in the Sarasota Area

Looking for recommendations on where to stay in the Sarasota area.

We are a couple in our mid-fifties; we like to stay in an area with nice beaches, and within walking distance of shops, restaurants, bars etc. We like lively places, but do not like crowds.

We just returned from a 10 day stay in the Clearwater Beach area and had a fabulous time; we found the weekends to be very busy, however it was nice and quiet during the week. We particularly liked the fact that there was so much to see in the area and enjoyed many day trips up and down to coast. We drove to Anna Maria Island and loved it, and may consider staying there, however we think that the evenings may be a little on the quiet side for us. It’s not that we are looking for lots of nightlife, we just like to take a stroll in the evening, have a nice casual dinner then wander back to the hotel.

Considering Siesta Key Village or the waterfront area of Sarasota mainland. We would prefer to stay in a hotel with an oceanview, but this is not a must. Can anyone help with recommendations for May 2010? Thanks so much.

Katie,

Are you going to have a car? Longboat Key accomodations are nice, but Longboat is quiet in the off season (June) and you would have to be able to get around. Not alot to do for nightlife.

St. Armands Circle has variety as does downtown Sarasota.

Also, do you have a budget in mind?

There are also nice condos on Siesta not very far from Siesta Village.

How luxurious does the rooms have to be?

Beau Lido Suites on Lido for example has a good location, but, the decor is "Olde Florida"

You can find condos on:

www.vrbo.com

www.vacationrentals.com

Look under Lido Key.

Many have a minimum rental period.

Closest place to St. Armands is Holiday Inn; it's about 1/4 mile. You might get lucky and find a nearby place on VRBO but otherwise you're probably looking at Limetree or Suntide Island Beach Club; both are condos/timeshares with many accomodations to rent and are directly on the beach. They are just under 1 mile from St. Armands.

Thanks for all of the great info. We are leaning towards Lido Key and like the sound of the Lido Beach Resort primarily because it is waterfront and within walking distance to St Armands. Are there any other similar resorts or condos within walking distance to St Armands?

As mentioned, the Holiday Inn Lido is across the street from the beach and is a 5 minute walk to St. Armands.

It is not in the same class as the Lido Beach Resort.

There are reviews of both places under the "hotel" heading or you can type the names in the Search box.
