Ideas on places to stay ..

Hiya

Myself and husband planning a trip to Florida, Gulf coast , in May 2017 For 3 weeks.

The idea is to explore areas that would be great place to stay to escape next U.K. Winter months.

We thought about considering Sarasota, Clearwater but would love to hear suggestions!

Would hope to find that ideal, friendly place in the sun to rent where we can sail, cycle, hike and run.... hope to hear any tips, thankyou 😀

Clearwater and Sarasota are 2 very different places.

Clearwater is much more developed.

If you are looking for a place close to the beach, there are many options, in all price ranges.

How much did you want to spend per week? does it have to be on a barrier island by the beach?

Siesta Key, Longboat Key, Lido Key and Anna Maria Island are beach areas. They all have a TripAdvisor page for info.

There are also places in downtown Sarasota (no beach)

There are many things to do in this area...parks, museums, fishing, hiking, kayaking, shopping etc etc.

www.visitsarasota.org

It is all about how much you want to spend on a place to stay and where.

Post on the Clearwater forum for info on that area.

Having stayed in both, I much prefer Sarasota. It is less developed, less tourists too. The barrier Islands are very nice. We always stay on Lido key. St Armands has some great shops and restaurants.

Hi there

Thankyou for those pointers .

Not knowing the rental costs, what would 1500 dollars buy you accommodation wise in those Areas mentioned?

Cheers

A week at most I would say- in a condo.

If you rent on the mainland, it will be cheaper than a barrier island. And which month makes a big difference- Dec/Jan are cheape rthan Feb/March.

Cheapest area in SW FL is the area from Venice to ft myers. Look at Englewood. Bradenton isnt too bad either, sarasota has a lot of areas that arent zoned for weekly (but have some 1 month rentals and more 3 month ones).

they might have meant 1500/month. That and 500 a week arent even off season prices really.

Do you folks book direct with Sarasota establishments, or through travel agents?

No one uses travel agents, that I know, to book lodging. They book direct.

There are also websites like www.vrbo.com where you can deal with condo owners directly.

Thanks for the advice. We'd be visiting in August, but we'd heard that the beaches can be too hot during the daytime, during that month.

All Florida is too hot for me in August but the breaches will be cooler than Orlando. do you need to go in summer?

by travel agents yu might mean tour operators now that most people book direct with airlines/hotels or at least a package.

Travel agents mean a different thing in the USA. Small shops, individuals who have mostly been priced out now.
