What is there to do?

Planning a trip in July or August for a week.

We have never been to the West Coast and looking for things to do.

We plan to stay either on Captiva or Sanibel.

Wife enjoys the sun/ beach/pool as long as the water is warm.

Walks on beach and shelling are good, but wondering about any sightseeing, and shopping/indoor things if it rains?

thanks in advance for any thoughts and recommendations, mark.

There’s nothing to do - that is the joy of Sanibel!

Just got back from a week on Sanibel. Left the island once to visit Ft Myers Beach. Didn't enjoy it at all and were happy to get back to Sanibel and its tranquility.

What's there to do? It's a well preserved (read...NO high rises or mass development) island that is over 1/2 wildlife refuge. The beaches are superb and the shelling is fantastic. Every day, we went to the beach, swam in the pool at our condo and ate breakfast and early dinner at the various restaurants on the island. We beach hopped and then finally settled on Bowman's as our favorite. This is not a place with a nightlife and clubs. It's not a place to see and be seen. There aren't packs of teenagers and 20 somethings trolling for a date. If you are interested in any of those things, you will not enjoy Sanibel.

In between our beach times, we visited the Ding Refuge (a must do...take a tram tour for sure), went on a dolphin cruise, did some shopping, went to the shell museum and just spent a lot of good family time enjoying the fine art of relaxing and enjoying Florida. It's a huge change from our home in Denver.

We were there May 30-June 6, 2018. It was turtle nesting season and it was great fun to see the turtle nests that were made overnight on the beach each morning. A few days ago, we came upon fresh tracks and what definitely looked like a nesting site that hadn't been marked off. We saw the tire tracks of the volunteers who search for the turtle nests every morning so we knew they either missed it or it wasn't there when they came by. We called the number that was on a sign on another nesting site and when we came back in the afternoon, it had been marked off. My daughters were quite proud.

Pretty much everything is outside on Sanibel so if it rains for the entire day, you'd be out of luck, even at the shopping centers, if you don't want to get wet. It rained often in the afternoons and we just took refuge or headed back to the condo for an hour or 2.

If your wife likes the beach and shelling, there is no better place. We swam for hours at Bowman's Beach and absolutely loved it. We filled 10, 1 gallon ziplocs with big, beautiful shells to take home. We ended up being so picky about our shells that any that were a color we didn't like or had a small chip, we brought back to the beach for others to enjoy. There were 2 grocery bags full of our "rejects".

We are home now and totally tanned and rested. We ended up going to sleep around 9 pm each night so we could get up early and shell in the morning hours. Then we'd head to breakfast, do an activity or 2 or go shopping and then head to the beach or pool for the rest of the day. When it rained, we'd head back to shower and get ready, then go to dinner. We ended each day at the pool or on the beach watching the sunset.

Lots of fun things to do at Yolo Watersports on Captiva. They have Waverunner tours around the upper islands, Parasailing, Paddle boards. You can also rent a golf cart, which is a great way to get around the village. If you are interested I suggest making a reservation. The water is perfect temperature. Enjoy the islands, they are wonderful.
