We'll be there a week from today, just wondering about the water clarity due to the lake O release... tia!
We've been there a few times, just worried about the lake release! Thx.
Sorry to report that Lake O releases started yesterday due to rising lake levels after nearly a foot of rain in May. Depending on how much water is released and for how long, the waters in Southwest Florida will be impacted. These releases have been happening for decades as part of the climate cycle. How much the water is impacted is affected by tides, wind and additional rainfall.
We have been on island when the water is affected but we have never had it ruin our time in paradise. It will take some time for the fresh water to make its way to Sanibel and typically it is San Carlos Bay and Lighthouse Beach that take the hit.
Thank you! The same thing happened whenwe came in '16 and it was beautiful! Fingers crossed!!
Zin, been going for years And never heard of the releases from Lake O until recently. Going back in October....hoping!
itsconnie, I think we have social media to thank for bringing the negative effects of Lake O releases to our collective attention. That, and the fact the releases hit during prime tourist season in 2016 seriously impacting SWFL's tourist industry. It's a double-edge sword: the negative publicity is not good for for the island but the negative publicity is spurring on more folks to get involved to push for solutions.
Bottom line is that it will take time to solve but there are a lot of things already in motion to do that. AND the releases do not have to ruin your vacation. Arm yourself with accurate info and make decisions accordingly. Just don't get caught up in the hysteria or be lulled into a sense of "everything is fine."
I think it's overall a very good thing that the public at large now has a general awareness about the water releases. Public pressure (and tourism $) is about the only thing that will force their hand, hopefully the proposed changes are implemented sooner than later.
