Not awful

Busier than most of January but not crazy, not compared to President's week or Easter

I don't think you "Need" to be there at Rope Drop but you can get quite a lot accomplished early

Are you staying at a Disney Resort ? Able to take advantage of the Extra Magic Hours ?

On days with even moderate crowds, arriving at park opening is a HUGE advantage.

For example, if you arrive at 9 and leave at Noon (3 hours), you will get more done than if you arrive at 12 and leave at 6 (6 hours). I may be overstating it a little bit, but not by much.

You can be leaving, happily satisfied you had a lot of the fun you wanted to have, just as the lines are really starting to get long.

January isn't a particularly busy month, so it is a good time to go from a crowd standpoint. The MLK weekend may be slightly busier because some schools may have a day off, but -- as others have said -- it will not be a big issue. However, the weather can be a factor in January -- Orlando is subject to occasional cold fronts during its winter, so the high temperature could be much cooler than the typical low 70s. It also gets much cooler in the evening. Be sure to have jackets, etc. so you can layer up.

Many families with young children find it helpful to go at rope drop, and then return to the hotel for a nap or pool time in the afternoon when the crowds are at peak, returning later and staying until closing. Not sure about the ages of your kids or how close you are staying, but it's a strategy to consider.
