Do you tip Car Rental employees?

The last time we flew into Orlando we rented from Dollar. The employeed showed us to the vehicle etc and when we handed him the tip he turned round and told us it was not enough. Has anyone else experienced this? I almost wanted to take the money back and give him nothing! I understand that there are not as many tourists and therefore tips will be down but to ask for more money was rude in my books.

Any time I have rented a car I always handled my own bags, but then again we don't have a lot since we only stay a week or less. It could be targeting those from the U. K. If so shame on them.

Should have offered to trade what you gave him for a ten, then when he handed it over,, told him to pizz off.

Now wait a minute, I'm starting to feel a little differently about this. As I said before, we DO tip the shuttle drivers when they help us with our bags, it's very nice not to have to lug them on and off. So I think I would feel the same way if someone carried our bags to our car in the garage (does Thrifty have this same over the bridge and through the woods set-up? We thought we were making life easy by booking a car ON airport, oh well). Anyway, I would not consider this a SCAM. If you don't want help, say so. Just as you would if you were declining the help of a bellboy in a hotel.

Now, I don't like the part about them complaining about the tip...but I have no problem with tipping if they do make my life a little easier.

Nor do I but he did not "give assistance".

Oh, I think I had you confused with the person who said they carried his bags across the bridge.

It was me who said about carrying bags. I still think its rude to say a tip is not enough and I would still question this..to question a tip is to give bad service in my books.

I completely agree, it was very rude. But I'm not sure why Nemesis was tipping for no reason in the first place. I guess I don't have a clear picture of this set-up at MCO - it sounds very unusual from most airport pick-up locations, where you just follow the signs to the car pick-ups, never have had anyone show me the way. Yes, most times there are elevators involved because the cars are on various levels of a garage, but I just can't picture them having enough employees to escort every single person to their car.

But regardless, if no one helped with my bags I would just say "thank you" when I got to the car, or if they did help with my bags I would tip. To me it sounds like a hostess showing you to your table in a restaurant...I wouldn't tip for that (except in very unusual circumstances - full but got us in anyway, gave us the primo table we wanted, etc)...but just taking you to your table (car), no tip. I've also never encountered anyone saying a tip was insufficient...if they did I'd probably say "sorry", ask for it back, then give them nothing.

We gave him a small tip because he got the car from bay where it was parked and brought it to us - that was all he did. Previously all people who have flown with Virgin go to their check in desk and an employee was waiting to escort you, but I am sure we could have found it ourselves but were not given that option.

We also tipped because it is the American custom to tip and were under the impression that tipping car rental people was the norm.
